LBJ on Stock '97 4Runner

Reading through some of the LJB failure threads that have cropped up lately, I've noticed a few people saying that these failures seem to happen only to those with lifts or bigger tires.

That got me thinking, and I remembered a conversation I had with my dad over text about a year ago about a LBJ failure that occured to a lady in his office. Her 4Runner is stock, and well, I'll let you read the rest of the conversation.

Not stock at all. And covered in mud; that truck has been rode hard and put away wet!

But LBJ's are a well known failure point and should be replaced regularly for sure. It does not just happen to lifted or wheeled rigs (though they are much more likely to fail).

Those look like Ironman coils to me. I'd say it was at least mildly lifted.

Maybe this failure does only happen to lifted trucks. I had no idea her truck had aftermarket coils.

If it is indeed those Ironman coils, they would only give 1.8" of lift, which is hardly anything and would not likely cause much extra stress on the LBJs vs stock. Most OME kits yield more lift than that.

It would be interesting to note how many kms is on the vehicle, if it has been driven hard, and if the LBJs have ever been inspected previously.

I doubt they'd ever been inspected. Your average driver doesn't think about these things.

Actually it happens on OLD trucks. The rubber breaks down. Its not surprising to mechanics.

If your truck is over 10 years or 125k then you could be at risk.
