LC coil spring Color codes

So I ordered LC Coils from Katy @ Rocki Top Auto and they came in today but I'm a little worried that they're not the right ones. They are a copper brown in color (which just means they're used, but I cannot see any color code whatsoever), measure just over 20" in height, 6" in width, & if I'm right are... 10/11 wraps? Which is mainly what leads me to believe they shipped me the wrong coils... Tell me what you guys think cause I may be having to call Katy at Rocki Top Auto soon.

EDIT: So I talked to Katy from Rocki Top just to double check the order and they are in fact the front coils from a 1993 Land Cruiser. Exactly what model Land Cruiser... I don't know? Any input you guys have would still be helpful though...

Wow and 10.5 wrap it looks like. They are pretty tight and the height is the same as 9-9.5 wraps. I would think they would provide a lot of lift but might be a little stiff and maybe not flex as well as other springs might. they have to be off of a FJ80 because 40's 60's all had leaf front and rear. good luck.

Wow.. yeah, they look thicker too...

10.5 wraps?? what the heck? even the 91s didnt come with that many wraps??

Ive done a ton of studying on these LC coils and I have no idea... did they come from the back end of an LC??

Katy should know to get the front ones... Ill check with her.

Yea, I called her today around 4pm EST. She double checked the order form (which came from Sierra Auto Recycling in Ridgecrest, CA) and they came off the front of a 93 LC. There's just not much that seems to add up about these... thickness, 10.5 wrap, copper brown color, and no color coded paint dots.

My only guess is that maybe these are lift coils for a LC? ...and the salvage yard that shipped them didn't know they weren't stock LC coils?

EDIT: The ONLY marking on them is on the bottom of the coil which says "RD10" if I'm right. I'll post up a picture of that too.

yep... thats my guess then...

EDIT: I think if you have them sent back to Katy, she can find some more and get them to you...

those look like OME J coils which are a 4 inch lift for the LC. i bet you will get like 8 inches of lift with those

Well as cool as 8 inches would be... I thiiiiink that's a little unpractical :lmao:

Here's the picture of the code on the bottom... don't think it means much but just in case.

Soooo... if these are LC 4" lift coils, how would I go about verifying that and would it be worth it to sell these & then buy again from Katy (essentially are they worth more than $90 total)?

I guess it depends on what you can get for them from the LC guys... try one of their boards and see if you can get more for em... I guess thats better than a str8 refund and swap with Katy if you can pull it off.

isnt IH8Mud one of the LC sites??

Yea I'll probably throw the pics up on their classified section & see if I get any bites in the next few days. If not then Katy told me she would correct the order and get me the right coils (hopefully at no extra cost).

EDIT: Luckily these aren't the last piece I need for my lift... otherwise this would be pretty frustrating. I'm still waiting on the unassembled coil-overs w/ Taco billies from ToyTec... I hope to have those within 2 weeks, but could be up to a month I think

So I have one more quick question for you guys running 9 wrap LC coils in the rear & adjustable coil-overs in the front...

If 9 wraps give approx. 4.5-5.5 inches of lift in the rear, and I'm assuming you all are jacking your adjustables up to at least 3 inches, then are most of you running with a pretty good amount of rake?

I have ToyTec adjustables on the way and was planning on 8 wrap LC coils so I would have minimal rake (~3" Fr lift, ~4" R lift). And now that I've done about uh... 4 hours of research on LC coils tonight, I'm gathering that if I potentially want to run 35's, then 9 wraps might be a better option. But how are you guys managing to run 9 wraps with minimal rake if adjustable fronts only go up to 3.5"? Or are you just running with alot of rake?

In other words, how much lift are you guys getting from stock with adjustable front coil-overs?

3" is conservative for how high some of us adjust ours.. mine are prob a bit higher and i have Neoprene cv boots too make up for it...

Yea I kinda got the feeling that was the case. Whats the rake like on your rig Du?

EDIT: Also, Du... just looking around at some Toyota parts sites and looking at production years for different LC front coils. I'm getting the feeling that in "general" (and please no one take this as fact, b/c this is only a enlightened guess...) the 91/92 fj80 carried the 9 wraps b/c of the bulkier engine, the 93/94 fzj80 carried the 7 wraps b/c of lighter engine, and then the 95/96/97 fzj80 carried the 8 wraps b/c of engine upgrades which increased weight. This could be total BS but just looking at general production times for the coils gave me this hunch.

Jan 1990 - Aug 1991... 1991 FJ80, 1992 FJ80, 1993 FJ80
Aug 1992 - Jan 1995... 1992 FZJ80, 1993 FZJ80, 1994 FZJ80, 1995 FZJ80
July 1995 - Jan 1998... 1996 FZJ80, 1997 FZJ80

...There were other production coils obviously (seeing as there's so many different color codes) but these 3 time frames stood out to me.

I'm running 8warps with 35's and just had to clearance a little front and rear. I've talked to guys running 37's without much clearancing just mostly on the rear bumper. I love how mine looks and handles. Im running kings up front and am just under 3 inches from stock. Granted I'm a 99 and pretty sure I had tall coils (no proof just parking lot comparisons). good luck.

yeah those are Slee 4 inch coils. My coworker has a FJ80 and is interested in them. I think he wants to find out if Katy has the rear ones too. you may have a buyer for them :thumb3:

That's awesome! I really appreciate that man. You can give him my email... [email protected] ...Any idea on what a reasonable price for them would be?

I know that Katy did not have any 80 coils in stock when I ordered so they came from Sierra Auto Recycling in Ridgecrest, CA. Their number is (760)446-5559 if he wants to give them a call ASAP to secure those rear coils. Contact name is David Healey. All this info comes from the UPS packing label.

I may be posting old info as I'm new to this forum and I confess that I didn't read this entire thread but this may possibly be some helpful info.

Can't remember for 100% sure but I believe the driverside spring is slightly taller than the passenger. When you order springs for the 80 series you have to put the taller one on the driverside I'm thinking. I noticed that a few guys in the beginning of this thread had different color codes on each of their springs...maybe that's why or maybe they pieced it together, I dont know. One other thing I've been seeing is that it seems the 91 fj80s have the taller springs consistently. 92s are also fj80s but I'm not sure about there coil sizes. You won't get into fzj80s until you hit 93-97 where the 3fe inline 6 (4.0L)was replaced by the 1fzfe inline 6 (4.5L). With that said one could buy a 93 & 94 that shared components with the 91-92 fj80s but have a 1fzfe engine. You can identify these 2 special year models (93-94) by whether they have rear drums instead of disc brakes. I only say that because I believe anyone that has conflicting info about spring sizes on 93-94 should be further investigated to see if the donor 93-94 had rear discs or rear drums. It may make a difference in front coil springs.

I sold a set of front coils off a 94 with rear drums...I believe were 9 wrap
Recently sold a set of 91s that I know for a fact were 9 wrap

CJ80Cruiser,

that's great info, to bad you just let your 9 wraps go. I think your estimate about left and right coils is correct. My 8 wraps have the same color codes and I found i needed to preload my front driver coil just a little more than the passengers to have my runner sit level. the strange thing is that I know my coils came off a 97 40th anniv addition FZJ 80. My buddies. if you are only looking to run 285s I would think that even 7.5 warps would give you plenty of lift in the rear. As Someone already mentioned you will still end up with some rake over any lift the front can handle. Good luck

I can say for a 100% fact that those are all font springs. The landcruiser rear springs have far less wraps and much bigger. Like you said in a later post your buddy dug them out of his shed. He probably forgot where they came from.

Here are the ones I got today. Confirmed came off of a 1997 Anniv addition FzJ80 with less than 100k. they all are just about the same height right at 19 inches. Two have color codes of Double Purple, Dark Blue, and White. The other two are Double Purple, Light Blue, and White colors are top to bottom. My buddy that I got them from didn't know which were the front and which were the rear.

coils 1&2 are 8 wraps coils 3&4 are 7.5 wraps. I plan to install them on the rear this weekend and will give you all an update with pics after.

I just picked up the following:

21" Blue Pink White 9.25 wraps
21" Grey Orange White 9.25 wraps

I plan on running my 5125 (9.8" travel) shocks in the rear combined with these coils - the front will be treated to Fox 2.5's along with All-Pro UCA's... Pics to follow this week!

Actually I just read this. I sold him those coils before I had any idea that I'd buy a 4runner. They were from a 91 btw.
