LE Gas Tank Skid

I know my 2014 Limited has only a half skid plate on the plastic gas tank. This bothers me and I want to fix it and have been looking at getting an aluminum plate.

I was wondering though if an OEM skid plate off a SR5 or Trail would fit? If so, I'll start looking for someone who has replaced their skids and might have their plate just sitting around.

I'm just thinking there has to be a reason Toyota only put a half plate on there. Doesn't LOOK like anything like XREAS would interfere but thought I'd ask the collective minds here.

The SR5/Trail skid should bolt right in. The hard points in the frame and body are all the same. If you're on Facebook lookup the Central Texas off road group. There are several members in there in the SA/Austin area who should be able to help you locate one. They're a good group. I have one out in my shop, but it's over 8 hours away from you.
 
They just do it to be cheap and save weight... the TE skid should bolt right up. It should be adequate for avg use.

I also highly recommend lower control arm mount skids for the rear. You will hit the passenger side often.... The two most common contact points for me are the gas tank skid (near the the rear LCA mount) on the driver side. And the rear LCA mount on the passenger side.

Also the rear LCAs themselves are super thin and weak... If you come down on one... they will bend very easy and make for bad day. Just something to be aware of. Good insurance to replace them with thicker aftermarket....but that can be more maintenance on the bushings.... If you were real handy... Could tack on 1/2-1/4 of a dom tube... To make the stock ones have way more strength and spread any point loads that came up....I thought about this... but mine was already bent.

I can confirm the early 5th Gen SR5's only have the half-skid. I don't know if they changed to a full-skid for the 2014 refresh.

Lots of people get rid of the OEM full Trail skid to go heavier aftermarket.
 
@ flatspin If you are ever down in Corpus Christi PM me and I will give you my old gas tank skid. It has some minor rash but is still in good shape.

I have a '12 sr5, most definitely had a full length stock skid. Tripped over it sitting on my shop floor this morning
 
I was not aware of the Limited having a half gas tank skid. I guess I'll watch for the next RCI group buy.

Hey which rear lca frame skids are you running? The Total Chaos skids look nice. I'll be installing metal tech offset rear lca's for more downtravel and would be interested to know if there are any clearance issues with the skids.

RCI with minor mods to clear the johnny joints. They are the best design but do require a tweak to clear the big joints. The TC ones are not very good at all.

You have to heat and arc the bottom section like I did in the pic..

If you make it Dallas much, I have my factory take off fuel tank skid you can have. I might be in Mable Falls in the next few months if you don't have a resolution by then.

Actually my daughter is headed to North Texas Univ. this fall so I imagine I'll be up there a lot soon.

Just let me know, I work in Grand Prairie and live in Flower Mound, so both are sort of on the way for you.The skids aren't going anywhere, take your time.
