Leaking axle catching up with me... O joy!

Alright here is the skinny, my axle has been leaking for quite some time now and my fear of the wheel bearings going south is coming true(I think). Been hearing a noise that sounded like a bearing going for about a month, was just today when I could finally hear it loud enough. It for sure sounds like a bearing but its not a constant grinding sound. I only hear the noise in turns where the weight of the truck shifts to one side in the rear, and it seems louder in right turns. I want to make sure I and looking in the right area and its not something stupid and simple to do with the suspension.

If it is the bearings I want to be sure I have a proper parts list. I have been looking for this info online but ether google hates me or I suck at the internet all the sudden lol.

From what I understand I need
bearings (derrrr)
retainers
O-rings
axle shaft oil seal and snap ring

I could be adding things in and I am probably missing something. Thanks for your help/info/input.

Edit: The passenger side valve cover just started leaking today too, her first oil leak :( what a day.

You ever check the diff fluid? you could have run low and and now your rear diff needs a rebuild or (used, much cheaper option) replacement. These rears are notorious for running low on oil and this happening, but it is just as likely that it is just a normal bad wheel bearing. Good Luck!

That was another thought/fear I have been having. I can only say I have been meaning too check it and top it off, but at the same time I was trying to coast tell I had the funds to just fix it up right. Its still going to be a few weeks but I should be able to do everything she needs(Tires, breaks, tune up, fix oil leak, and rear axle). Will be lifting her up first thing in the morning and get a better look at things. -crosses fingers-
 
While I am on the subject of working on the rear axle. I am planning on buying (with any luck) a 16' car hauler to move the step child, MB, and any parts trucks I buy. Are there any "upgrades" I should be looking at for towing like this. (I have horrible luck with dollys and tow bars, lost 2 cars with a dolly and almost lost the stepchild with a tow bar)

They have only 64k miles (supposedly) BUT they are 15 years old. You have to keep that in mind.

I wouldn't buy those parts from RockAuto. Go with good quality bearings and seals so your not redoing it again.

There is that, but I know just from driving it and hearing it that it is in the rear end. No need to jack up the front end right now, I'll look at that when I do my breaks. And there is no "supposedly" this truck had one owner before now and they have 64k miles on them, I put the last 40k on the truck myself.

RockAuto was just the name of a site I could think of off hand, I have been looking at a few sites and know I can do better than $100 a side with quality parts, even if I have to order from multiple sites. I don't think I would ever order from them to tell the truth, I hate how there site is laid out and I cant be sure what I am looking at most the time.

Anyway enough messing around with the internet, time to go out and look things over. I dread doing things with the factory bottle jack (partly why I have been putting it off) but its all I got atm lol.

Time to get a real floor jack. Costco usually has a good low profile floor jack for about $100

Yeah I keep buying the stupid $20 jacks at autozone and they start leaking oil in a year it seams. Been wanting to get a hi lift jack from HF(seance I have the 91 4x4 now), but still waiting on money.

Well the good news is I am not as bad off as I thought. I do need to top off the oil and will do tonight after I can get to the auto parts store. But the grinding I am hearing is really the break shoes, make sense now why I was only hearing it in turns. So its just a job I have to do anyway. I will end up doing the bearings anyway when I go to fix the leak but if not as bad as I feared.
 
First: DO NOT use the high-lift for working on the truck. HORRIBLE idea. Ask me how I know. :/

Second, Marlin Crawler is a great site, great people to deal with. They've been doing Toyota stuff for years. YEARS.

You're probably not going to find ALL the stuff you need, for cheaper. The bearings from the stealership will be about 100 alone.

Going with cheap bearings, is a bad idea because you'll have to do this all again. Same with seals. Do it right the first time.

Third, get a good floor jack. Harbor Freight, while looking tempting, don't go for it. The last thing you want to happen is for the jack to fail and crush your ass. I've had a Craftsman jack I got from K-Mart a couple years ago, and it does well still.
 
I once installed rear axle bearings (OEM) for a 1990 4x4 hilux. At the same time a guy brought the rear axles of another hilux 4x4 to the same machine shop with Nachi (or similar, non OEM). It is 1/3 the price I paid for. Now the installation. After the OEM bearing was installed it spun freely and easily. Now the aftermarket bearing.... it was tight and hard to spin.

I saw the difference right there. Always do it right for the first time and cry once!
 
Yeah I'd like to second that .. Don't use a high lift jack to work on your truck. Its very dangerous - never get under a vehicle lifted by a high lift jack.

Instead use jack stands to stabalize rhw vehicle and normal floor jack (again trust me Costco!) To lift it.
 
The Toyota rear bearings are only $65 each from Camelback Toyota Online Parts.

I just (Friday) did the rear Axel (inner) seals and new brakes.

We didn't change the bearings out. They seemed fine and have about 100k on them. Toyota bearings are really high quality. My truck still has original front bearings @ 224k miles. I've had the truck since 65k miles.
 
I log in and really can't believe the posts I see. I NEED a hi lift jack cuz any other jack I buy is not tall enough to lift the tires off the ground on my 91, and that is a given not to work on the truck AT ALL with ANY jack under it. Thats what jack stands are for. Pluse there is nothing wrong with HF jacks. If it fails and a car crushes me thats my stupidity. You don't get under a truck to jack it up. Now on to the parts comments, I said quality parts for cheaper and I meant it. I know not to waste money on crap parts, but I also know how to add and know that $35 in seals and garbage and $30 for a bearing dose not add up to $100 a side. Now I am off, god knows how long after this.
