considering its starting price is way less than the 4runner. I'm wondering the same thing.

Having driven one a few times and ridden in my brother's '16 Taco a lot, here's what I don't like about it:
The seats are shorter front to back than the T4R.
The seats aren't as high off the floor as the T4R.
No power seats.
Those equal the seats not being as comfortable for me.
Even after the transmission TSB his seems to hunt for the right gear a lot.
It's noisier inside.
The interior area is much smaller than the T4R, and you can feel it.
No rear air or power ports.
Not as many places to put switches for aftermarket toys.
The knobs and buttons on the Entune radio are smaller and touch-enabled. And they suck.
Now here's what I like about his:
The dashboard MFD is much much better. Shows all kinds of cool stuff.
He gets better mileage than I do (might be due to my tires though)
It's a truck.
Push button start and keyless entry.
He has more cupholders in the front.
His Entune screen is bigger.
I was seriously considering waiting to get a 3rd gen Taco when I got my T4R. Overall I'm glad I went with the runner instead.

The two biggest issues I hear from customers/owners and that personally bother me.
-The drivetrain is poorly tuned/programmed and drives more like a car than a light truck. The transmission hunts for gears too readily, it fights trying to be driven and used as a light truck, and is slower than a 5th gen off the line (which is slower than a 4th gen off the line).
-The engine isn't really a truck engine, it's essentially a modified RWD car engine used for light truck duty. Which is why it's transverse variants are popping up in the Highlander and Sienna.
The sad part is that drivetrain will most likely be in the 6th gen 4Runner if they decide to make one and most likely be even more "ECO" tuned going forward.

The list MattAK made is a good summary of what people seem to dislike. I do not like how the transmission hunts. I had the soft ware update and the dealer tech fried my ECU. They ordered a new one and kept my truck for a week. This was the week after a hurricane and I had clean up to do. I am changing dealers for service. The truck itself is fine. The seats are not as comfy as the 2000 4Runner or the 2008 I usually drive. I bought a leftover and just searched among dealers for price and packages I could deal with. I have the tech package and it's pretty much wasted on me but my teenagers like it. Over all I'm happy to be driving a new truck but I understand other people's concerns. I'm getting 23.7 mpg after the update.

My Brother has a 2005 Tacoma and he loves it.
I have to say from my experience (I have had my $runner 2 weeks and a loaner 2017 taco for 3 days of that) and the lower end power on the taco was way better...
but I love the runner for many other reasons!!! I think it will fit the bill no matter what!!
