I haven't tried them yet. I wanted to have time to try compare against the stock bulbs and not just pop them in and forget about it. What I'd like to do is get some pictures of each using the same camera settings so maybe this weekend.

I doubt the LEDs will be bright enough for reverse.
What you want is an 885 or 886 bulb with 50 watts of holy-crap-brightness.

I suspect you're right, which is why I haven't just popped them in and call it done.
Do you have any links to good 885/886 replacements? It looks like you have to do some hacking on the 885/886 housings to make the bulbs fit. What about some of the other LED T10 bulbs, I see some on ebay that claim they're 50 watts and some that claim 1400 lumens. Any thoughts on those?

These are all you need and probably last a lifetime.
You do need to clip the base and fold back the tines 180 degrees at the half-way mark, but it's stupid easy. Just be sure to wear nitrile gloves so as not to get any oil from your fingers on the bulb.

After reading several pages on the Tacoma forum, it seems like they recommend the 35W bulb. Looked like one of the members melted part of the housing with the 50w after prolonged use.

Ok, I tested a couple of different bulbs in the dome light today. Unfortunately, I broke the one that came with the kit trying to make it fit better and ordered the wrong replacement. But the results are still useful. These were all taken with the camera set to manual for everything (iso, white balance, shutter speed and aperture. And all were taken within a few minutes of each other so exterior conditions remained the same.
My conclusions. The 5050 bulbs seem to have about the same brightness, just different color temperature from the original halogen. The 5630 bulbs are definitely a lot brighter and the "warm white" 4500k bulbs are a close match for the original halogens.
The 28mm bulb fit much easier but I didn't have too much trouble with the 31mm bulb this time. It was daytime and I did take the whole assembly out. I have the 5050 bulb in there now since it is close to the same color temp as the other bulbs but I'm debating on if I should order a new 5630 in "pure white" 6000K to get the brighter dome light.
Update: The 12 led 5630 panel with festoon adapter fits without any trouble and is definitely brighter than the 5050 bulb. It should be brighter than the 6 smd 5630 bulb but looks similar in the picture. That may be because it was too bright for the exposure and because I took this one over 1 month later and my not have the camera in the same position (but did use the same camera settings).

Thanks for this comparison. How did you remove the whole dome assembly? Is it complicated?

It's pretty easy. After taking the lens off you'll see a couple of tabs up there that almost look like they could be switches. One is right next to the switch and the other is at the opposite corner. Slide those in towards the center of the housing, they'll move about a 1/4 maybe 3/8th of an inch. That makes the housing loose. I then just wiggled it around until it popped out of the headliner.
To put it back. Just line it up, push up and then slide those tabs back out to their original position.
If that's not clear, I'll go take a picture of it.

I installed mine last night and the dome light was the biggest pain in the ass. The LED bulb is slightly bigger than the standard light. Had to remove the whe assembly after messing up one bulb.

Agreed! After replacing bulbs in mine 4 or 5 times now I think I've learned a bit about how to make it a bit easier. I have an LED panel with adapter coming so when I put that in I'll try to get some pictures to go along with this explanation.
To fit the 31mm bulbs in, it helps to squash the spring clip in as much as possible before trying to fit the bulb. I used the same plastic tool I was using to pop the lens off and just bent the spring clip so that it had basically no spring left. Then the 31mm bulb fit better.
To fit the 28mm bulb, I then had to pry the spring clip out even farther than it was originally so that it would hold the smaller bulb.
My one concern now is how many times can I bend that metal before I fatigue it and it breaks. Anyone know how much a new dome light assembly is?

But I don't have it yet. The description sounded like it might be a close match to the "pure white" but since it doesn't list the temperature I won't know until it comes in. The estimated eta is Jan 28 - Mar 5! I don't know that I need that much light in the back seat
