LED turn signals - hyper flashing and how to fix?

DRL-equipped 4th-gens like yours use a different flasher relay which uses a 12-pin connector, non-DRL 4th-gens use a 8-pin flasher relay like the one you posted from Amazon. Long story short, that flasher won't fit.

Has anyone found the correct flasher to use for 03-05's with DRLs?
I have new front lens and want to put nice looking LEDs in them.

I'm on the same boat. My '03 has DRLs, I have new lenses and hard-to-get Philips Ultinon amber LED bulbs that I don't want running on all the time, and I also picked up a Diode Dynamics smart flasher for non-DRL vehicles.

According to post #130 in this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/engin...2378-daytime-running-lights-9.html#post132775 apparently all 4th-gens are pre-wired for 12-pin flashers, and there's a jumper harness the converts it to an 8-pin. I emailed my usual online Toyota parts source asking about availability and never got a response :mmph:,I'm going to email them again after posting this. I'll probably stop by the neighborhood dealer tomorrow morning (Sat) after work and hopefully someone helpful and experienced can help me.

There's three other ways of converting it, two requires splicing of the dash harness and the third is a plug-and-play but requires a core exchange of the existing flasher. All three options will make the DRLs inoperative.
 • Locate the 8-pin connector and start splicing. I did buy one off eBay that has several inches of wire, the colors aren't the same but I've figured out what goes to where. I haven't started on modifying my dash harness because of the weather, and replacing my front brake calipers/rotors/pads takes precedence over the flasher conversion.
 • Order a TapTurn flasher that's hardwired instead of equipped with the connector then start splicing.
 • Send TapTurn a 12-pin flasher which they will then gut and install new internals. They (TapTurn) said the flasher can even be a non-operational one from the junkyard, all they need is the case and connector. Who knows, they may now stock those modified flashers since I contacted them about several months ago.

For the second and third option you need to email TapTurn first to place an order.

Thanks for the links, but my situation is a tad different than yours.
I want to maintain the DRLs, and looking at the tapturn, it looks like they only offer solutions if you don't want the DRLs.

I would never have thought this would be an issue :(

There's some threads here and I think Toyotanation and/or Tacomaworld showing how to modify the existing 12-pin relay, not too hard to do and it keeps the DRLs. Either that or run load resistors, most parts stores offer them now.

Out of curiosity what LEDs are you running? I tried Osram Zevos and they have a nice amber color, but they're a tad dimmer than stock. The Philips bulbs I mentioned are pretty intense but they're not designed to run full-time, I bench-tested them and once they start heating up they begin to flash on their own, like a built-in error message LOL

I tried load resistors, but because of the DRL. They got hot after about 30 seconds of being on, and started to melt the housings.

The LEDs I got are from the TheRetrofit source (Morimoto) they seemed pretty bright for the short time I had one on.

The mod you're talking about, is that the one where they sanded down a resistor?

So I put together an adapter harness and luckily it worked. I'm now running a LED compatible non-DRL flasher with some cool features https://www.diodedynamics.com/store...arttap-cf18-lm449-flasher-relay/category/789/

The larger connector is also used for CD changer connections on OEM Toyota head units, found one on Amazon. The smaller connector was found on eBay.

I also received an email from the dealer, they said the original jumper harness may be available separately and they'll be ordering one (no charge) and send me photos to make sure it's the right one.

Yes sir, grind those shunt resistor things.

I might have a fix for your hyperflash, semi-fix that is. You will still have to use the resistors but at least they won't be running constantly on in DRL mode. It'll require two SPDT relays, I need to put it down as a diagram first to make sure it works LOL.

Also semi off topic but I noticed you converted your rear bumper reflectors to illuminate. I found ones already equipped with bulb openings, they're actually for Landcruiser Prado 120 (what the Lexus GX470 is based on body-wise) but the quality is mediocre.

Hey guys,
So I contacted TapTurn about our 12 pin flashers.

He said he might have something, and offered to let me be the beta. But I would have to ship him a 12 pin flasher, and also pay the full price of the mod.

He would then send me something to test out.

It would have been over $110, plus the price of the flasher I sent him. So I had to decline, that's way more than I could pay for something like this.

But if anyone else is interested, you could send them an email and let them know.

Yikes, will that beta flasher keep DRLs?

cdoyle I figured out how to bypass the resistors for the front signals when on as DRLs,so they don't heat up so much from being constantly on. In turn signal mode the resistors will be connected to the bulb circuits to prevent hyperflash

12v positive has to on with the key on ACC or ON, you can also tap directly to battery.
87 and 30 can be intecchangeable, it was just easier doing it this way since I was drawing over an existing illustration.

I got tired of looking for a relay, so I did the grinding down the resistor in the flasher circuit, and it works like a charm. Took longer to get to the flasher than it did to modify it.

My issue now, the LEDs I bought from the retrofit source must not be designed to be on constantly as a DRL. One side died completely within a month, and the other side looks dim so I think some of the LEDs are out in it too.

What LEDs are you guys using as DRLs?
