ok so we all know the gas tank sits quite low so i was thinking since i will be getting a new chassis and doing some work to it i was thinking of placing a fuel cell in the back where the spare used to sit. ive been looking at tanks from 15-20 gallons but im looking for basically the shallowest one possible

Could look into putting in a 2wd pickup tank, they hang a little lower. Im not %100 on this though.

I just have my stock tank mounted up in the bed.

My biggest qs with a fuel cell is knowing what fuel pump to match up to it...

I would imagine that you can use any inline fuel pump, right? I thought the biggest issue would be using a fuel level sender and making it work on the stock fuel gauge. I haven't looked too far into this though.
 
Keep this updated! I'm considering putting a fuel cell in the bed just so I don't bump it while wheeling. I'll keep researching and let you know what I come up with.
 
A friend of mine with a 2nd gen got a fuel cell/tank that fit in the spare area, but that was more than 10 years ago. He was big on driving to Baja to go fishing from LA and need the extra fuel. Since he had 33" tires, it would not fit on the spare tire area anyways. I think Downey OR made a fuel cell, but they are out of business, last I heard.
 
cheapest solution i have found was a 3 inch body lift. this will let you raise your fuel tank just a tad if not level with the lowest part of the frame
after that, you can raise the engine and transmission up 3 inches as well. true flat belly

i would consider this if i didnt already have a arb bumper and really dont want to hack it up any more.
 
spence when you pick up the truck ill show you the fuel cell i bought for the truck the OHM rating for fuel gauge is easy to fix.
 
Do you use/need the back seats or is purely an offroading truck.

I've seen and briefly considered, cutting the floor above the tank, the part that slopes down under the seats then lifting the tank into that space, and welding in some new floor. I believe the pickups are tucked up higher because they have a flat bed, and don't slope for rear seats.

I don't think a body lift is needed for that. But it is needed to get flat belly.
