license plate placement

I'm, hopefully, taking delivery of my T4R early next week. I'll be transferring plates so want to be ready to answer this question when I do.

What is the preferred place for the front plate? i've looked through some pics and couldn't really come to a consensus.

Front plate is required in MO.

I'll be doing light off roading but not daunting. I really don't care if it is easily read, I'm more interested in how it looks. I do plan on putting a light bar in the grill [already bought the brackets].

I would check with your state motor vehicle dept first. Ask them where you can and can't place that front plate. Then pick the option that best suits your set up.

There was also a thread a while back about mounting the front plate you can search for. Apparently there are threaded mounting holes in some of the T4R front bumpers. Some dealers have exposed them and some have not. This probably depends on if the state they end up requires a front plate or not.

I guess if you don't want to put it there is doesn't matter.

I have seen 4 options for front plates

*Glove box (my personal fav.)

*OEM adapter plate for a vertical plate off the front valence (the norm)

*Bracket/zip ties for plate mounted in grill area (below the cross bar that either hold the Toyota logo or the "TOYOTA" if you have a Pro) - Think this looks more out of place then the normal mount however, it would be more removable if you wanted to take something on/off

*Plate bent to "conform" to the front valence, not sure how this was mounted but someone posted a photo not long ago and I had mixed feelings, its not as "hey I am a license plate" as the OEM vertical mount but it does look a tacky with just a bent plate stuck to the valence

Obviously if you get an aftermarket front bumper your options open up a lot, I don't want to jinx myself and your mileage may vary but I have been surprised how little the local LEO seem to care about me missing the front plate. Countless times I have had LEO's in front of me, across an intersection, gas station etc and no one seems to care. I think your location and the selection/mindset of the officers who patrol it really determines if you can "get away with it". If you are really concerned with looks you could try running without but you are breaking the law and if caught , no whining.

According to Missouri License Plates & Placards Information | DMV.org, you might want to confirm what this means:

Some vehicles must have a tag both on the front AND the rear. Others will only need a rear license plate. The MO DOR will issue the correct number of tags for your vehicle.

The one time I bought a new vehicle back when I lived in MO the dealer had installed the front bracket before I had ever seen it. The frame had their name on it, and few dealers will miss the chance to stick a piece of extra advertising on the road.

Just call the dealer and ask. If you ask before delivery most likely you can get it done free, or at least no more charge than what you're already paying. If you ask after delivery they may charge for labor. All 10 minutes of it.

I've told the dealer to add NOTHING!

Nothing on the paint, nothing hanging.

I'll do so again.

I want to be 'legal' in the least obnoxious way possible.

Ya, I've looked into that. Some farm vehicles, construction vehicles and heavily weighted vehicles only need 1 plate.

Any 'normal' vehicle will require 2.

I did move from the socialist republic if IL to the sane state of MO.

MO is a pretty good state, one of the best, in which to live.

I'm blessed in that I can travel as much as I wish and do what I do almost anywhere in the States.

Mostly, I just want to have my own way all the time and the Gov't doesn't agree w/ me. :cry2:

In my province there are only rear plates for regular vehicle registration, so front plates are not common. As a result, dealers don't drill them. When I bought my truck they just threw the front plate mounting bracket in the trunk.

However, volunteer emergency responders (I'm in search & rescue) get special plates and are required to have them in the front for identification purposes.

So I mounted mine to my grill, so I don't have to put in holes. Figured I could always drill the bumper later if I wanted to, so I'd start with the grill and see how it worked out. I zip tied a mounting bracket to the grill and screwed the plate into that and covered it all with a cover. It was easy to do, would be easy to remove, and I've come to like the look. Some may prefer the bumper mount, but I felt this was somewhat more clean - although that's personal preference.
