i originally bought 265/70/17s as well, quickly switched to 285s. Buy 285s the first time and save the hassle.

How much trimming is that going to require though? I had read that 285's needs the body mount chop...Is that right?

My body mount is unaltered a I've run 285's for a while before I went to my tall skinny tires. The true test will be to see how my truck fits the 34.7" tires I have my eyes on
Never had any issue's with them rubbing the body mount either. I have 1.5" spacers too. I suppose a wide meaty tire "might" touch them, but it's doubtful.

no amount of work is greater than having to look at your truck day in and day out thinking....dam my tires look small!..

I rubbed. I had to trim my bumper, inner fender and my body mount. I went ahead and did the full chop since I was cutting already. I also have my caster maxed so that plays a part. I also only rubbed backing up and in instances when my wheel was stuffed while turned. Its really easy.

Daystar 2.5/1.5 leveling, & DuraTrac 255/75R17
It won't be my final solution, but I needed new tires, especially for winter, and I wanted to ease into the decision of what suspension components I'd eventually want. I recently switched from a Jeep XJ, and when I lifted that I loved certain things about it, but hated some of the effects it had on ride and handling. Because I REALLY like so many things about the T4R's stock handling and ride, I'm very hesitant to make major changes quickly, so I opted to go "cheap and easy" for now. Ya'll are an incredible resource, but reports on things like ride characteristics are too subjective to depend on. With my everyday use of this vehicle I can't afford to be dealing with too many unintended indiosyncracies generated by my need to mess around with things. (I need a spare vehicle? for when this one is getting kinks worked out :nod
I wanted to stay below the lift threshold that risks snowballing issues with suspension, spacers, steering, and drive-train; plus for tires I tend to lean toward tall-&-skinny, at least for winter. So far, so good, and I'm rather pleased with the way things turned out; and looking forward to making more permanent suspension changes in the spring with new wheels and summer tires.
Also changed swaybar bushings, and will be working on extended quick-disconnects in the near future.
before: (stock with 265/65R17)
and after: (2.5"f/1.5"r spacers, 255/75R17)
It'll be getting about 1000+mi added to it next week, including what just hit Buffalo NY, so... good test.
It seems an unpopular view, but I will NOT be removing my running boards before spring, and may never remove the splash guards. I've lost too many vehicles to rotted out rockers and door sills. I like this truck, and I'm trying to make it last. The new RCi front skid will replace the stock (dead) one as soon as the paint dries.

What 255s do you have that are only 8.2" wide? My 255/75r17 are 10" wide...

These tires DO RUB in full steering lock on the front inner frame and the upper control arm. I will need to source 1" bolt on spacers to avoid. They do not rub the fender liners or mud flaps.
