Lift and Tire Central (pics)... Post 'em Up!

Just completed 5100 2.5" / DS 1.5" lift in my 04...got the full 2.5" lift in the front and close to same in rear. Tire guys saying 285/70r17 np with a little trimming ...that's fine . Looking at Maxxis Bighorns as an alternative but I'm a BFG KO2 fan...both available in 275/70r17 which I prefer to reduce probability of rub

Preferences or experiences with Maxxis Bighorns?

Sold it a few years ago... but here was my 4th gen. Plan on doing a similar build with my new TRD Pro.

Well.... Let me put it this way. If i could take the 4.7 I had in my 04, and drop it in my TRDP, I would. I do miss the sound, torque, and fuel mileage wasn't all that different. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the 4.0, I don't feel it's as underpowered as people say it is and know it is a VERY reliable engine. I love my TRDP and personally I feel like the 4.0 (while the numbers may not be behind it) can compete in the class and should not be looked at as a con. It still feels and sounds like a v6 truck engine, and not so much a v6 car engine (such as the new Atkinson cycle in the taco from what I hear). And I like the part time 4wd as opposed to the full time in the 4th gens.

Damn, are you modded or stock(ish)? I'm asking because you should be able to get better mpg then that if you are trying. Stock, I could get 22+ (highway) mpg if I was really trying. Avg was about 17-18.

No doubt lifted on 35s. I don't know what he has done to his ride or if he's stock. What I'm getting at is, if he is stock or close to it, there may be an underlying issue, that's all.

Sure thing HOJeepster. Your 4Runner has been one of the many inspirations for my build. Here are a few pics that I had already but I would gladly take more if there are specific ones you would like to see. The install wasn't hard except that it didn't fit perfectly so I had to mess with it some after the install. I wish the bumper was 1/2" wider so that each side was spaced away from the body by 1/4". The sides of my bumper touch the rearmost fender flare brackets on both sides and a little extra width would eliminate that. I could lower the bumper to get a little more room but I would have to make some spacers to do that. I ended up wedging some rubber bushings between the bumper sides and the body to keep the sides spaced out a bit. In the first pic you can also see the driver's side bumper side is angled up. I used one of the spacers from the old trailer hitch to align it.

This is the thread I followed for the install but newer bumpers are a little different apparently as there are no angled brackets that bolt on in wheel well area and the tire carrier spindle is welded on now.

I love the bumper but as with a lot of custom fabricated stuff there always some tweaking...

Anything else you might change about the bumper? Such as adding a place for backup lights? Do you like how the spare tire sits now? Notice a huge difference in driving with the weight?

I'm pretty sure that CBI will put the tire carrier on either side and/or change the swing direction of it. You specify how you want it when you order it. I wanted retain use of the backup camera which is my primary reason for having the tire on the passenger side. The tire blocks the view some but the camera is still useful now. It wouldn't be hard to mount a new camera either though.

The carrier normally has more to it for mounting jerry cans and whatever else but I opted to have a tire carrier only. There is high lift mount long ways under/behind where the tire goes.

I haven't had it long enough to realize what other options the bumper needs but for sure there will be some. And as far as the weight change, I can't say I noticed any change. I think only I drove the truck 5 miles between the lift install and bumper install :biggrin2:

Here is a pic of my view out the back window. The actual tire holder can be unbolted and moved up and down on the swing arm. For reference where mine is located I know I can lower it a least one position down which would provide a little more visibility out the back window.

Thanks, great input. I wasn't aware the tire height could be adjusted. Looks good, it doesn't block as much of the view as I originally imagined.

Running the 285 BFG tires and I need a place for my spare. (purchased 5 tires). The rear bumper is the way to go. Right now it just rides in my rear cargo area
