Lift gate supports - where to buy?

I need new lift gate supports. The stockers only get the gate up about 2/3rds of the way before giving up. Can someone point me to good replacements?

I have the same problem with my lift gate. Would be nice to know a good aftermarket source if OEM is expensive. Haven't checked yet.

Mine never went up all the way since about two years after I bought it. (I never remembered to try to get a warranty fix on it; I try to stay away from the dealer.) When one lift died, it would not stay up AT ALL. I replaced it at considerably less than dealer cost at Advanced Auto. But it only got me back to where I was....pushing the last six inches by hand. [Do not quote out of context ].

I point this out because you may be disappointed with the result from swapping out. Please keep us posted.

Thats actually not a bad idea. I know Nissan is starting to use it in their convertible 370z cars.

Hopefully some warranty stuff comes thru so I can collect parts.

Well, there is a company that can rebuild them to cold specifications.
Mine are on their way out and I was talking to Frank at www.strutwise.com
and he said that he can have them rebuilt to be stronger.

The other option is to buy the OEM cold specifications one off of one of the Toyota on-line dealers. They are pretty expensive though, I believe it's $140 each so that's $ 280 for a pair.

Just got the new supports in today. Installed them, and they work great! They open the lift gate ALL the way, and have a nice damping effect at the end of the stroke...so the door opens to it's full extent smoothly.

Here's a link, in case anyone else need's em! They are made in the USA by Strongarm. Seem to be good quality, and they fit right in!

Now, for the replacement, is it pretty simple?
Meaning, does it come already put together or is it just the (piston & cylinder)

The reason I ask is because it seems like I would have to remove some sort of ring and washers before installing the new one, correct?

I replaced these on a grand cherokee and they were simple, an electric screwdriver and i was done in 20 min.
