Lift Kits: So many...which to go with?

Hey Guys,

So its been awhile since I've visited the site but I'm finally back on now that I have some time, and have spent the better part of a week scouring and searching each of your pictures of different lifts/tire size combinations as well as what problems you ran into installing the lifts (dash lights, rubbing, etc).

What would you recommend a good all-round lift for someone who is only planning on off-roading every once in awhile? I have the wife and child (in car seat) so I'm not looking to turn the runner into bigfoot but I'd like a nice lift with some bigger tires, without sacrificing everyday road comfort and all the other problems that I see people run into when installing a lift (dash lights coming on, extending abs lines, etc).

Does anyone have any straight recommendations/links? (Example: "Get XXX kit. When getting it installed, watch out for XXX. You will have to have them modify XXX. No rubbing/technical difficulties, etc")

I've seen so many good looking 4runners here and I'm itching to get our family ride lifted...but it seems there are quite a few possibilities out there and I'd like some advice on a good lift without a lot of trouble to go with it.

If you're not looking to change the ride quality too much, a spacer lift might be what you're looking for. Personally, I hate the pitch and yaw going through the corners, and can't wait to get my coilover lift installed (I'm going with the Toytec Ultimate). Speaking of which, Toytec has a good selection of gear, you should head over there and check it out. I've been exchanging emails with their man Doug for a bit now, and he's been very helpful in terms of sorting out the different lift types and what would be a good fit for what you describe. You could also check out the lifted thread (stickied at the top), there are some nice setups and you'll get some good ideas from it.

Different trucks will have different words of advice.

I've also been considering this ever since I got my TE exactly a month ago. From what I've seen so far from other people's builds I think I'm eventually going to go with the toytec ultimate lift with camburg uniball UCA. Most likely stick with stock wheels but powder coat them and mount on some 285/70/17 duratracs. Any inputs?

Funny cause we need new tires and the wife said...go ahead and put a lift on it and get bigger tires. So I have a few days to get this figured out quick!

I went with ToyTec Ultimate and put 18" wheels and 285/65 tires on 'er.

VERY happy with the setup.

ToyTec seemed to be the best bang for the buck as well.

Ditch the XREAS if you're in a Limited this setup is much much better at doing what the XREAS did.

Thanks gadgetguy. You will not be disappointed. I chose the TT for not only overall value for the $ but figured since the Toyota dealer sells them, I'd minimize any nonsense at the dealer's shop if I were to have issues.

This thing looks soooo much better in person. The pics don't do any of our rigs justice I am sure.

The TT's look nice. I have an SR5 so hopefully those will work.

I meant to ask, did you guys have any issues with voiding warranty when installing the lift?

Do yourself a favor and look up the Magnusson-Moss Act, it basically says for a dealer to deny you a warranty claim on the basis of an aftermarket part, they have to prove that the aftermarket part caused the problem.
