I would have liked to have put a little more lift under, but I do a lot of long distance driving with it. Where it's at now is a decent compromise between off road capability and highway manners.

Tall and Skinny

I'd like to get the look of an old school safari truck. Not planning to do any serious off roading and don't want to do a lift.
How tall (and skinny) a tire can I fit on a Gen3 (97 limited)?

I realize it would mess up the speedometer but I'll deal with that to get the height I'd like.

These are 33x9.50. You can fit whatever size you like depending on how much modifying you want to do. 35s will probably require some decent trimming when at full up travel, but otherwise if they're skinny that'll help a lot for clearance when fully turned. I plan to jump to 35s, but probably not keep them so skinny since these I had just laying around and needed new tires...

I don't know much about lifts, so I'm hoping someone can let me know:

1. Does this look like a 3 in lift (now that you have the side view)

2. How do I get my tires to stop rubbing the wheel well when I go off-roading? It's not a problem on streets, but I live in Hawai'i and need to go over lava fields to get to certain places. I want a car that performs, not just looks good

So I've kinda scratched using spacers or an offset- as per what ppl said- that doesn't seem to work. What are my other options?

-Better lift?
-Air shocks?
-Higher lift?

Obviously going to a smaller tire (265, rather than 285), but don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

Hey Everyone! Need some advice. I have a 2001 4Runner w/ 285 70 17 tires and a 3 in lift- per the advice of my local off-roading shop. Car looks great but wheels are much too large for tire well. When I go off-roading tires rub on wheel well, especially in the back. Off-roading shop people are incompetent & un-professional; they won't take responsibility for job badly done. Not sure what to do- please advise how to fix this issue w/o decreasing tire size. Would any of the following work?

1. Body lift
2. Spacers
3. Air shocks

Not experienced with lifts & trusted local company. Now I want a second opinion. I appreciate your time :

Passed you coming up Waikoloa rd today, not bad your runner, I'd suggest add a body lift if you want to clear those tires, Im running 285/75/16 toytec/eibach with bilstein 5100's on 2nd perch and the rear got the toytec superflex with 5100's and on top of that is a 3" body lift, really wanting to jump to 35's but being I don't have gears that won't happen anytime soon. Anyways back to your topic have you tried goin to top notch in Hilo? Guys are pretty good there

Tires- Nitto trail grapplers 285/75/16
Wheels- Procomp 7031 (Amazon cheapies lol)

Currently getting 25.5" from center of wheel to top of fender up front and 27" of wheel gap in the rear, idk I still think I should be getting more???

Small world! I totally saw your truck earlier today- sick ride all around. I like how there's lights under car too. Never seen that before. Did you get ur lift done at Top Notch? Went there last week & just doing my research before I have them fix what Island Performance did wrong...

No I did the lift myself but got everything from them, when I first got my runner the lift on there was whack!! So I basically redid the entire suspension, the guys at top notch are really good and know what they're doin, the pic of the 4th gen next to mines was done by them last week and did a awesome job. unlike I.P. I've heard way too much negative stories from them which is why I tell my friends stay away from them.

The only right way to fix this in my opinion is to extend the bump stops. No matter how tall the spring the axle will still rise to the bumps stop at full compression, that is what they are there for. I would start there and see if it still rubs the bumper. I just took the bumper wings off after this until I got my aftermarket bumper on. My rig is built 100% for go not show and I am here to tell you a 3 inch lift will perform great if you get it set up right to clear tires. I am sure you have some rubbing in the front too, but it is harder to make the front bottom out compared to the rear.

Lift: TRD/OME 906 lift with Bilstein 5100 all the way around. Fronts on the bottom perch. Really liking this set up.
Wheels: 17x7.5 FJs picked up on CL.
Tires: GY Wrangler AT/S 265/70/17s. They have been fine for my purposes -- just eroded and muddy logging roads to get to our MTB spots.

Yes I know the running boards need to come off...

Question: I haven't been able to see what the max tire size is for this setup. I'm assuming 255/75/17s (thinking Duratracs next) would fit fine since they are barely larger than what I have but could I fit 285s in there (without spacers/UCAs/etc) with this smallish lift? Guessing not.

So even with bumper stops, your tires still rubbed on wheel well w/ a 3in lift? Was getting an aftermarket bumper the only solution for you?

Don't want to remove stock bumper if possible.... You have 255 85 16? Your tires don't look that small... mine are 285 70 17 and look about the same size...

Air Bags

Hey- what do you all think of air bags on suspension?

Still trying to find a way to not get my tires to touch wheel well/bumper when I go off-roading... back wheels only.

Exactly what lift you have? Brand/lift height? My runner I had before my white one had air bags, I was being ghetto and used that as my rear lift lol, all I can say is that it didn't really work good for off roading, took it down hapuna point one time and the drivers side bag almost popped.

Got the Daystar KT09108BK 3 in lift. Super bad, cheap lift from I.P. Gonna go to T.N. and get a better one soon... Still deciding whether or not to include the air bags though.

Sounds like you had air bags and nothing else though yeah? So there was probably more tension on the bags, that's why they almost popped. I assume with a good lift & air bags, that wouldn't happen.... just my two cents. Still a novice here though.

Tundra trd bilstein 5100. 3rd notch in front. 5100 in rear with lc 8 wraps. Goodyear duratracs 285/75r16. No spacers. LR uca.

Like your led bar inside the cab. How does that work for you.
