LIFTED roll call: Please read

Ok, I've been reading on here all weekend and am about to do a 3" lift on my (almost) 19 year old 1997 4runner this weekend.

I NEED to know, how many of you lifted without ANY modification to the old inner boot,

how many lifted WITH mod to the original boot,

If you did a mod, what did you do and did it work

How many have used "high angle" silicone boots and did they last?

how many didnt risk it and ordered new boot and or shaft.

I really need some conclusive answers here. Also, can you post how many miles since the lift/ mod etc?

Thank you in advance!!!

My boots tore inside of two months lifted 3". 218k on the stockers at stock height. By 225k they were torn.

Same exact story here, even with similar mileage (208k stock and lifted at 218k, boots tore at 220k)

After they tore, I opted to get Napa brand axles; lifetime warranty. I am of the opinion that the old, stiffened rubber could not yield to the new axle angle after my lift; with new rubber from new axles, I have not yet had any issue after 10k miles of being lifted.

I hosed the grease off and am still driving it. I'll get around to swapping the cv's after the holidays and travel are done. Bigger priorities at hand right now. And yes I've been driving it still. 400 miles a week.

I'm liking this. I'm seeing some measurable data here. I've got a similar dilemma started in another thread. Trying to decide if I should go with extended boots or not. Bang for the buck??

Get that fixed ASAP!!! LOL. Nah, you know what youre getting into. Thanks for the reply. I'm not brave enough to drive it like you. Thx again, for the response and input!

Rock Rat, I'm hoping that we can figure out the best remedy for the dilemma we all seem to be facing! Thats why I started this thread, so we can try to document what works, what doesnt, and so on.

Installed lift at 235k, with diff drop. Wheeled it pretty hard and drove for another 20k... but one trail finally did it. One boot tore at full flex on an obstacle, while other CV blew apart on the next obstacle (see here for pics and more info).

Swapped in Napa CVs, no issues yet, currently at about 5k on them.

Time to grab the old physics book or thermodynamics, (I don't remember) and look at that chapter on tribology again. I should have stayed awake in college. Serious dust in that area. haha

I remember reading your thread and seeing the pics. Dang man 20K on the trails you do is a long time after a lift on original boots. Hats off to ya. Hope the NAPA axles treat you well.

Reminds me I should address that issue. My inner boots gave out the same week I lifted it back in 2011, I just wiped the grease off and kept driving it to this day.

HAHAHAHA! You guys are crazy. How much lift? How many miles on original before lift?

Did they tear or just seep/leak at the boot/shaft?

BTW, Thx for responding/posting!!!

my boots started leaking grease out of the edge, tore off old clamps and re-clamped with hose clamps. No problems since ( only like 1k miles on it though)

Both my outer boots tore pretty fast after lifting, I replaced the boots with a reboot kit from NAPA and didn't have any issues with boots tearing after that.

Did you 'stretch" the boot or reinstall the clamp/boot in same location?

How long between lift and leak?

Thank you in advance!!!

This is the first case of hearing of the OUTER boots tearing! Hmmm. I'll have to keep an eye on my outers as well. Thank you for posting!!!

My original inner boots tore at the same time.. I just figured it was old rubber and since its so cold they just tore easy. I got the napa axles and left the boots how they came. I figured if I tried stretching the boots and something happened then maybe they would hassle me about the warranty since I messed with them.

How long ago did you replace the axle/boot?
Was this after a lift?
Is it still holding up well?

my boots tore basically right after lifting. now after about 35k on my autozone gold axles ive had zero problems, and i wheel hard without a sway bar and no diff drop.
