my boots tore basically right after lifting. now after about 35k on my autozone gold axles ive had zero problems, and i wheel hard without a sway bar and no diff drop.

Did the originals tear or just leak?

130k unlifted before I noticed both inners leaking a little bit. Not sure where they were leaking from, never really cared to look too close. I poked a small hole and squirt grease in there from time to time. 20k later they seem to have stopped leaking grease.

Just lifted like 3 inches with 1" diff drop in the last month. If I have any problems ill probably just reboot.

Did you 'stretch" the boot or reinstall the clamp/boot in same location?

How long between lift and leak?

I didn't stretch anything. Just put the new clamp in the same spot. It started leaking like a day or two after I installed the lift.

140k SS 1.2 Radflo lift installed, wheeled/towed through deep sand

Boots started spitting immediately, but no tears until outers at 143k miles.
Inners also cracking at 143k

Will replace with napa new CV Axles first of the year and keep you posted

Thank you to all of you that have replied! You have no idea how much this helps!

I'm going to be doing my lift within the next 2 weeks and I think I am just going to put a new hose clamp (or worm gear clamp as some call it) on the small side of the inner the same day I do the lift. I'm not going to stretch the boot either, as I can not, for the life of me, see how the boot touching itself (absolutely NO friction involved...)can cause a leak, but we'll see.

'97 Sr5 w/ approx 110k miles, put OME 881Fr/890rr on it in the summer 2013(when I acquired the vehicle).
Bought me about 3" in the rear(which I expect to sag to about 2.5), roughly 2.5(sag to 2, maybe) in the front.
Appear to be original CV boots. No new boots, no boot adjustment, no boot failure(20K miles later), no diff drop, no panhard bar change. Drives fine.

My outer boots with 100k ripped, literally, the day I installed my ToyTec BOSS coilovers set to 3" of lift and the ToyTec diff drop.

I let the grease spray for a few days, cleaned it up, and drove on those axles for about a year.

I them replaced with Autozone CVs that had lifetime warranties, did NO modifications to them, and they're still holding strong.

I currently have about 2" of suspension lift up front, and I am still running that toytec diffdrop.

Really glad to hear you have had no issues! Gives me hope, but I'm afraid you may be one in 100k without an issue. LOL. Maybe I'll be #2!

163k, old boots tore as I was doing the lift. Swapped in Napa axles, no issues in 8k.

When I bought my 4Runner it was stock with 209,000 on it and both outer boots were torn . I installed a 2" lift and no diff drop at 213K and installed new manufactured Cardone axles at the same time . Now I'm at 222K and all the boots look good and no leaks .

I've lifted two of the three 4Runner's I have owned. First one was a 97 lifted it with OME and it started leaking. Put little crimps on the inner and outer and didn't leak. But due to the fact they looked like original I replaced them. Replaced them with (i forget) and still put clamps on it to prevent leaks (paranoid). Sold it so not sure where it is or at now...

Second one was a 5th gen haven't seen a leak but as it is going to be leaving me soon I don't care...lol

Third is my current and will stay with me till who knows when hopefully at least 10-15 years..
It has 115k miles on it, came lifted and diff dropped and no tears or leaks. When it does I will replace with Napa or Autozone, whichever is less expensive..


Good Information in here. I will note that my 97 had no sway bars and I actually wheeled in versus exploring. The 2000 is purely exploration/driving I can see a big difference in longevity and different items not failing like my other...
