limited tires done at 30K!!!

1. Did anyone else have to replace the stock limited tire at 30K miles?
I went to go get the tires rotated and balanced and they told me that I needed new tires and it's not recommended to rotate them at this point..

Which takes me to my next question. Since I'm going to have to replace the tires, I wanted to go with a 20X8 rim or higher.


Is anyone running 275/60R/20 on their rigs?

I ask because I like the price tag, looks and reviews of this tire Error - Discount Tire - Cooper Discover ATP.

They don't make it in 275/55/20.

Tire calculator online says I will have %4.1 of a difference. Aside from damaging gas millage, what else should I be concerned about?

I don't know, but with the exception of my Maxima, I have had to replace every OEM tire on every vehicle I owned around the 30k mark.

I didn't even wait. I hated the OEM (Bridgestone) tires on my LE and replaced them at 10K -- Got a set of Continental CrossContact LX20's from TireRack -- 275/55/20. Improved the sure-footedness of the ride, no more "slight wander" with the steering, better road feel and they look exponentially better. The tire size fits the overall size of the vehicle now. They're all-season vice A/T, but for me that's fine as I do 95% + of my driving on the road.

I wonder how they would be in the sand at the beach, that's the extent of my off roading. I had a pair of conti cross contacts on my range rover that lasted all but 20k, tires that wore poorly and sucked ass in the rain and snow. How are these wearing?

Here in Las Vegas 30K miles is about the same time I change my tires too, My last set on my GMC Sierra needed changed before the tread wore out because of the heat out here my tires were starting to dry out and rot.

If you are going to change out the wheels also why not go to 17" or even an 18"? There are alot more tire choices in these sizes.

They shouldn't be lower quality but are often different from the aftermarket version of the same name. Toyota sets the tire manufacturing specs and they probably put an emphasis on low rolling resistance. There's a triangle in tire design which is traction, rolling resistance, and treadwear, where improvement in one negatively affects one or both of the others.

I am running the Cooper A/T3's and could not be happier! They are some of the best tires I have ever purchased (have had BFG AT's, GoodYear MTR's, Nitto Terra Grappler, Bridgestone Revo2, ect). You will find an overwhelming positive review of the Cooper A/T3's here on the board. I think I am running the biggest size guitar3, but in any size, they are spectacular tires. BTW, mine are 275/60-20 with ZERO rubbing on stock rims. :thumb3:

I've had mine balanced 3 times and they still shake the truck like an angry mom shaking a crying infant; it's ridiculous. I have 285/70/17 Cooper AT/3's. I'm at my wits-end with these tires. My stock POS's were smooth as butter. I'll give the tire shop one more chance; Hopefully they'll warranty them out if they still won't balance. Glad yours worked out good!

Thanks Qjake, I always run searches before posting anything. It does return something, but not necessarily what's addressing my question.

Regarding the 17's, I hear that 20's handle a little better on road. Also more of the OEM look and feel, plus the Limited comes with bigger breaks > bigger wheels.

I'm sure they'd be fine in the sand at the beach if you deflat them a bit. I've only had the tires on for 800 miles so far so there's nothing to tell me how they will wear at this point. Only time will tell. These tires got good ratings on TireRack.com -- The LX20's are a different tire than the regular CrossContacts.

OEM life

Well, with my first Mercedes I had to replace the rear tires at 8k, no sh$t. Never spun the wheels once either. They were Conti's, replaced with BFGoodrich, and ran 15k more before I sold it, they looked like new.

I sold my Limited wheels and tires on my current 4R, and replaced with 18" OEM rims and Michelin LTX MS2s, now have 16k on them and they look brand new at this point.

Get a different tire shop to balance that, moreover, get someone with a good balancing machine to give it a go.

Sometimes you need to unmount, turn some number of degrees, and re-mount the tire on the rim to get a balance to work out. The bigger the tire, the more likely this is. Most tire shop kids either don't know or don't bother. Just sayin'

ETA: I bought my Nittos at a shop and at least they were honest enough to say that their balance machine may not get the balance exactly right, they did the best they could. And the balance was taken off the bill.
