Line-X'ing the underbody?

While waiting for my T4R to make its appearance I’m planning my mods. One thing I would like to have is rust proofing. If I lived ‘back east’, I would have a bunch of companies to choose from but here in Colorado, they just don’t bother.

So I was thinking of having the wheel wells and underbody coated with Line-X. Along with rust protection it will add general underbody protection and provide additional sound proofing. The only concern is making sure they don’t plug any weep/drain holes and how will Line-X hold up with the heat coming off the exhaust system, expecially near and in front of the CAT.

Any opions?

I used this stuff: Amsoil HD metal protector

AMSOIL - MP Heavy Duty Metal Protector (AMH)

It is basically an oil that sets up as a tough waxy covering. I got some drips on the garage floor tiles and it does not come off easily at all. Even after power washing the floor several times some of the drips are still there and seem permanent.

I think that line X stuff is permeable so water gets to the metal. It looks good initially but is rusting under the "rubber-stuff" coating. Good for a truck bed probably not so good on everything on the undercarriage.

There is a reason OEM's do not use undercoating anymore. A crack or seam that moisture can get into and get trapped. The OEM's use a coating to keep the underbody from rusting now. Personally I think it would be a waste of money but it's yours so go for it. Around here a lot of salt is used on the roads and I see 3G 4Runners with no rust.

If you want sound deadening do it from the inside with dynamat.

I've been thinking about rust protection as well and here's an interesting article I found @ autopia So far I'm staying away from undercoating.

Colorado is pretty dry climate relatively speaking hence why they "don't bother" out here.

Just take your truck to the car washes and wash the underneath every so often during the winter and I think you'll be fine.

I got my 2002 4Runner from the east coast shipped out here, holy crap the underneath was a sea of red. You just don't see that out here...
