LiquiMoly "Ceratec" from Germany

I know everyone is skeptical (and rightly so) of "engine treatments." I have been skeptical as well but with my rig pushing 250K, I am becoming more open to trying some things out.

I did a TON of research on a product called "Ceratec" by a company in Germany by the name of LiquiMoly. When I was stationed in Germany, I had German friends and they were familiar with the products from this company. Apparently they swear by in their BMW's and Mercedes'.

Anyways, it is a ceramic type additive that allegedly improves your engine and performance through a "bonding" of micron sized ceramic material. It anneals to the metal parts in the engine and improves mileage and performance.

NAPA is the only place that sells this stuff locally. SO, I tried it.

It looks like buttermilk and one can treats up to 5 quarts. Even though our 5VZ FE engines have 5.5 quarts, I did it anyways. I can tell a significant difference in the hum of the engine and the gas mileage. I have much smoother acceleration and idle. The mileage keeps improving (I only have 300 miles on the product as of now....) Even with gas prices dropping like rock, I wanted this extra ounce of protection. I am glad I did it. I will see what the oil looks like after my next change (I added this with new Mobil 1) and post again.

For all of you who think I am nuts, I will partially agree. I am VERY SKEPTICAL about dumping things in my engine but I researched and reviewed this stuff for weeks. I even called friends in Germany who were very familiar with the product. Moreover, this stuff has been tested and cleared by a variety of REAL LABS and TESTING AGENCIES in Germany. Like the "sham wow" commercial says "Made in Germany so you know it is good..." LOL

So I've been reading on there site for a while and my German isn't the best, what kind of fuel eco are u seeing. Besides just this one product looks like they make a wide range of stuff and I wouldn't even begin to know where to start.

Guys - this is the link to the product at the local NAPA store where I purchased the Ceratec. They have a wide assortment of LiquiMoly products.

With respect to improvements in gas mileage, I am pretty OCD when it comes to recording my mileage, where I bought the gas, how much I paid, etc. (I also have a spreadsheet of every single dime and part I have put into my rig for the whole time I have owned it). At first, I only recorded a city driving increase of mileage from 17.13mpg to an increase of 17.81. This is such a small difference though, there could be other variables that contributed to it without this Ceratec. The last tank full was about the same. So, perhaps it is too early to tell or perhaps there won't be a dramatic difference. HOWEVER, I can tell a SIGNIFICANT difference in the idle (especially at a stop) and the "sound" of the engine. I don't think it is my imagination either. In addition, even though I don't understand it, the truck seems to shifting better and more efficiently (I don't understand how that could happen as I did nothing to the transmission....any help here?)

I consider myself the "lab rat" for this little test of this product and I will try and keep this post updated with any changes I see - good or bad. So far though, I have to say, I am pleased with this product. A previous poster put up the link for the product at Amazon and the reviews there seem pretty positive as well.

So what's the difference between their Ceratec and moly motor oil additive?

Ceramic coating vs oil coating?

There is a $20 difference between the two. Any input??

No idea, maybe Liquid Moly USA could give some input.

Mos2 is good stuff; I have used it in two Fords and a 2AZ-FE engine. It helped with the idle in the first two and helped lessen the valve train chatter in the latter. It turns the oil to a lighter color.

I have no idea about the MPG increase. No qualms in using it.

Liquidmoly is an excellent oil used in MBs, Audis, and Bimmers. My friend's brother's DC European auto shop has a couple of weights in bulk.

This is about the only thing I would use in my crankcase other than oil:

Thanks to LittleCaeser for confirming what the women in my life have said for years (HAHAHA)

The difference between the Ceratec and the other LiquiMoly products seems to be the Ceratec is a nano-ceramic material and the other oils and things they have contain "molybdenum" with is some kind of space age lubricant first used in the aerospace industry to lubricate moon rovers and whatever else they shot up in space.....
 
Have you tried using LiquiMoly oil in your 4Runner yet? Perhaps in the 5W40 variety. I would guess that they put this type of additive in their own oil to begin with.

T4R2014: The next oil change I have after this Ceratec test, I am going to purchase the LiquiMoly 5W30 enhanced with molybdenum to see if there is a difference. At this point, with the mileage on my rig, I figure "why not" and see what happens........

In the event it becomes a complete clusterf(&k, then you guys get to benefit from my experience.... :)

I see no gamble in trying LiquiMoly oil. It is a proven brand in Europe.

BD, you should know by now that all women are nuts, to some degree or another.

NAPA usually puts LM oils on sale twice a year, maybe quarterly now. My cousin was a store manager for five years until 2012. He told me their fuel injector cleaner sold well FWIW.
 
Hmm. Not really sure why anyone would dump some unknown crap into their crankcase on an engine that has survived beyond 100,000 miles. Simply, if you keep the oil clean with a good filter and use synthetic oil, the engine will continue to run forever(close to it). If it was prematurely wearing out, it would have failed by now. Just my most humble opinion.

Now on topic, the rumors against using additives (no less valid than the rumors in favor of additives) say that some additives will block small passages in the engine or that the substance that bonds to the engine parts makes it so slick the motor oil cannot stick to the surfaces and opens the metal up to corrosion. In either case Its probably just snake oil.

personal experience: Once I used slick 50 in a 71 corvette which I had just rebuilt the engine. I was invited to drive in the 4th of July parade. My coolant temp gauge wasnt reading right so I didnt know what had happened. At the end of the parade, driving roughly 40 minutes at idle speed I parked the car and checked the coolant level. Not a drop of coolant was in the radiator. I had a leak under the car. My engine ran in 90* heat without coolant for almost an hour. It didn't seize nor suffer any ill effects. I can only attribute that to the slick 50 that was still in the oil.
 
I've used it

for 40k miles, i can't say it improved fuel efficiency any. My engine was fine before and fine after but no improvement one way or another.

What i don't like is how it turns the oil murky grey immediately after putting it in. Tough to get a read on how clean it is after.

What i like to use instead is seafoam in the oil, now there i see benefits. At first it would come out filthy black, then after a few more oil change cycles it would come out cleaner and cleaner. I'd recommend that for our older engines instead. Good oil, especially name brand full synthetic has all the lubrication properties we need, the old engines just need good carbon cleanouts. Luck to all.
 
I have used the Mos2 for the better part of seven years with no ill effects. The color of the oil becomes a little grey as jgue467 pointed out. Th oil also seems to thin out.

My uncle's neighbor swore by Slick 50 treatment back in the late 80s up through the 90s, Teflon or no Teflon. It lined the shelves of Western Auto back in the day.
