List of drop-in replacement speakers (4th gen)

Are there drop-in replacement speakers for the 4th generation? The 6x9 fronts and the 6.5 rears. I'm referring to those that would NOT need to have a mounting baffle fabricated in order to fit in the stock locations. It's tough to seek and find these throughout all the threads. Do such speakers exist? If so, I'd like this thread to be a compilation of those speaker brands & models that you folks have successfully used - to help out everyone else like myself who doesn't want to make or buy speaker baffles/mounts.

The OME setup has the speakers molded into its own mounting bracket. This mounting bracket provides additional 1 to 1

Thanks....yeah, I saw those.... but at $60 for both pairs, I'd like to put that cash to better use in buying the actual speakers.

I bought a pair of thick sheetmetal speaker adapter/mounts for my wrangler for $5.... some dude in the jeep forum just fabbed them up himself and sold probably 50 pairs to the members. Any takers for that task for the 4runner?!

Sounds like (so far) that there are 0 exact replacments and that "something" must be done to mount even a 6x9 where the stock 6x9 goes? If so... then WOW....That blows.

i changed all four speakers in my 05 components in the front coaxiels in the back i used mdf wood and a jig to make the brackets and the work came out clean and my system is awesome i looked into speaker instaal kits and either it was cheap plastic or to thick so i just made them myself and i am very happy

heres my two cents:
Just get a dremmel, cut the OEM speakers out of their housing, and epoxy the adapter ring that comes with your speakers onto the OEM housing. Its really pretty easy, and the OEM housing is better than any adapter you could buy. It fits perfectly, is very sturdy, even has a hood in the back to protect against water, and you can even use the factory plug! It is really not that hard to do, and it just can't get any better than this.

I forgot to mention: there are no drop in replacements. I bought some adapters that were very cheap quality and didn't fit well. The OEM housings are better than any adapter you can buy and are worth more as an adapter than keeping the stock speaker on your shelf for some reason or trying to sell it or anything like that. And for those of you concerned about taking your speakers out when you sell the vehicle, just pull your speakers out, replace them with an inexpensive set of coaxials, and tell the buyer that you have aftermarket speakers that are still better than OEM, and take your expensive components or whatever with you to your next car.

that a great idea was gonna do it myself in a similar way but always thought what if i need my oem speakers now the speakers are in my garage and there gonna stay there until i throw them out ..................................................................................................

Warthog, what size and brand speakers are those? Are you using your stock head unit to power them? And one last question, how do they sound?

The speakers are infinity kappa 6.5 inch speakers. The front are the components (model 60.5 cs or something), rear are 3 ways (model 63.5i or something). They are 2005 model at 4 ohms (2006 models are 2 ohms). Currently I'm powering with a Scion HU, which I'm not very happy with. I don't really like the sound of the Scion HU plus I think the speakers are not efficient enough to sound good with a HU and really need an amp. I bought the speakers with the intention of putting in an amp all along, but so far, the amp is sitting under my bed waiting for me to get to it.

If you are going to use HU only, I would recommend a more efficient speaker, like the reference series (I think the sensitivity is 92 db vs. 90 db). If you are using an amp, go with the kappas, especially since the new kappas, at 2 ohm, will draw more power from your amp. Not sure how the 2ohms will do with a head unit.

Front crossovers are mounted where the original tweeter was. My component tweeter is beside the woofer. Contrary to popular belief, having tweeters high in the door is not ideal. They should be as close to equa-distant from you, so low in the doors is preferred. The brown part from the picture above is a clipboard that I dremmeled to approximate shape and epoxied to the OEM housing.

Rear crossovers are zip tied to the metal tube low in the inside part of the door. These are very small crossovers for the 3 way speakers.

Very nice work. I have a very simular setup with the four speaker adaptors (no components). It took much longer than I expected (two weekends) But I wanted to do it right and I changed my design 2 or 3 times. I set my adaptors on my hot water heater, over night, to aid the glue to dry.

Someone here once posted pics of their PVC pipe speaker adaptors. It was very interesting as well. There are some great home-designs that come out of this forum!

Just curious - what amp did you get? What type of inputs does it have? I have the Scion HU also and I'm looking at getting an amp.

I have an infinity 5 channel amp that I bought years ago for my previous car. I am planning to replace the scion HU with an aftermarket one so I can have pre-amp outputs. If you amp the scion HU, look for an amp that accepts speaker level inputs, or else you will have to use a line output converter. i remember seeing a post or two from someone who used line output converters to amp a scion HU. Try a search.
