Lithium Jump Start Battery

I started looking into a jump starting kit because I have heard from multiple people that it's cheaper and less problematic than a dual battery.

I use one I bought from AESWave.com works great and has been holding up for almost a year with regular use.

regular use is important.

from my very limited lipo use in RC stuff, the batteries do not like being stored fully charged. they are supposed to be somewhere around 40-50% charge.

I think for a vehicle, and for getting OUT there, a second battery is still a better option.

I bought an XP-10 last year. Used it to jump my boat twice and a minivan on one charge. Already paid for itself. I've just had our the one year so not sure on longevity, but again I would have paid the marina more than the battery cost already so future jumps are gravy.

I just got this one but haven't used it. They seem well built and came highly recommended by another member on the board who works for a dealership where the mechanics use them.

Micro-Start XP-10 test

I thought I would drop some real world experience with this jump start pack here.

TL;DR: Micro-Start XP-10 will start 4runner with OEM battery disconnected.

I purchased a Micro-Start XP-10 from Amazon in October for 150 dollars. It arrived fully charged, with a really nice case, and several connectors for use as an extra battery. So I stored it in the back of the 4runner for 3 months. Yesterday, I was doing some maintenance, so I put it to the test. When I got it out, it still showed full charge (5 led's). Since my OEM battery was still fully charged, I disconnected the leads and attached the clamps to the positive and negative leads. Then to the XP-10 per the instructions. I was then able to start my Limited with the push button start. It cranked on the first try, but it seemed like I needed to hold the push button in a little longer, so I tried again with a little longer push, and the car started fine on the second try.

Also as a comment, it did require 'Boost' mode since it was the equivalent of a totally dead battery. The circuitry in the pack reads the battery condition and indicates which mode is required, it will even protect from reverse connections (although I did not test that!). Manual says the pack should be 60% (3 led's) or greater to jump.

The review on these packs (NoCo, Micro-Start) are all over the place, some have great experiences, but some complaining that they did not hold charge, start a V-6 or outright failed prior to use. I suspect that many of these may be counterfeit. One tell tale from an Amazon review is that the real Micro-Start comes with a matte rather than shiny finish, and has a hologram decal sealing the case. The shiny finish versions were bulging and failing while charging. Some comments were that these packs don't work at low temps - this test was at ~ 50 degrees F.

I'm satisfied that this battery pack would be a good backup to take on trips, and a good alternative to a dual battery in my current application (running ham radios with the car switched off). Very compact, the case with connectors is ~10 inches square and 4 inches thick. The battery pack itself is the size of a small book, and only weighs 18oz. I'll probably still carry cables, but this would do on solo trips. Also, this will allow me to jump start other folks in time of need, without risking my truck's electronics.

Not the same as a dual battery, but a good emergency backup. Please let me know if there are other helpful details I could provide.

I have had it about a year and it is awesome. I tested it by disconnecting the battery on my 5.3L yukon and starting it with only the Bolt Power unit. I cannot tell you how many times I have used it to jump someone off and even start my lawn mower or power a cb radio.

I no longer carry jumper cables.

I was at work and this guy that comes by in a POS pickup to scavenge old pallets is in the parking lot trying to get started. One of the guys is out there with jumper cables hooked to an equal POS and the thing wont turn over. Disconnect the jumper cables and hook up the bolt power and started right up. well for about 15 seconds and then dies. Started it about six times in a row and I am talking about cranking and cranking. finally got it to stay running. I never leave home without it. Bought on for all of my kids cars too.

Another vote for the Antigravity XP-10. I’ve used it to jump two 4Runners. Also the battery pooped out in my Tahoe and it cranked that 5.3 numerous times over a few days without being recharged. It will run my dad’s CPAP for over 2 nights and will also run my Engel MT45 fridge for about 4 hours.

I bought an XP-10 in 2017, and love it. It saved my bacon last August when my 4Runner's battery died unexpectedly in the middle of Nowhere, NV. It was easy to use and started the engine up right away, and didn't even show any drain. It also comes in handy occasionally for recharging a phone or camera battery, etc.
