Locked my key in my TE when camping over weekend

Over the long weekend, we were off road camping in Anza borrego desert.
My TE was loaded with bikes on Yakima hitch bike rack so I had to use the nice feature of rolling up/down rear window to get access to my trunk.
Everything was great except that when I used the key to roll rear window up, surprisingly it also locks all doors. I did no realize that until I left my key in passenger side when I rushed to get some thing and slammed the door behind. I was locked out in wildness 2+ hours drive from home.
Luckily, we had a separate group coming for a day trip and we managed to have our spare key brought over after half day.
My question is why when I turn the key at trunk key hole locks all doors. I expect it only locks the trunk door but not all the doors. I think my 3rd gen 4Runner only locks the trunk door.
Is there a way to reprogram the TE to change this behavior?

Wow, sorry to hear that. I do know that if the key is in the ignition the car won't lock. Also, I find it odd that your door locked while open. When I try to lock my truck with "arrows" on the back, it BEEPS at my if any of my doors are open. Also, I can't lock my smartfob in the truck - but I know that's only on the smartkey. I'm just surprised that you could lock the doors with one of them open. Sorry about your luck! Get your "plastic credit card" key cut so that you can have that in your pocket just in case.
 
I'm having a hard time understanding the chain of events here. how did you lock the doors from outside the vehicle while your keys were in there? did you roll the windows up and throw your keys in while they were going up?:confused:

The steps are the following:
- I left passenger side doors open
- I had my trunk door closed and rear window rolled down since I had 3 bikes on hitch rack and I need to put things into trunk.
- From outside, I inserted my car key into the trunk door key hole and turned to key to the right to roll the rear window up. When I did this, I here car door lock sound and in fact it did lock all doors even the open passenger side one.
- Then I went to the passenger side to get some stuff and accidentally left my key on the seat.
- I closed the passenger side door
- Opps
 
I just confirmed this on my 2012 TE - I hadn't discovered this "feature" yet either. If I have the back passenger door open and try to lock the car with the key fob, I get the continuous alarm tone and it won't lock. If instead I use the key to close the tailgate window, it first locks all the doors - including the open passenger door - before rolling up the window.
 
Do you have Safety Connect on your TE active?

I think I read that if you have safety connect sos active on your t4r, then you can call their service center up and they can remotely unlock it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is why whenever you go off road or in remote areas always bring your spare key. You can also get a spare key made without the chip for under $5 that will let you unlock the doors and keep it in your billfold.

i do this also,

i bring a spare key when on trips that are off road or far from the house.
 
get another key made, no chip

strong rare earth coin shaped magnet on the top of the frame back by the rear wheels, stick the key to it
