Locking Diff Quirk

I have only had to use my rear locking diff (2011 4runner Trail) a few times, but each time I did, I did not have instantaneous engagement.

In other words, I had to drive forward or back a little bit to get the locking diff light to transition from intermittent blinking to a solid light indicator.

Is this normal?

If the axle splines aren't aligned in the differential you need to roll it a few feet to get them aligned. They're still toothed and they need to mesh with the locking mechanism. Below is an air locker, but it's the same operation.

There is some similarities to how they engage, but air lockers are basically instant on. E-lockers can be very quirky and I have seen many people struggle with them. Best just to leave it on once in an area where you need it.

If you can turn, it will lock up quicker.

the electric solenoids arnt strong enough to cause instant lock, an air diaphragm at 80-100PSI like a ARB is the only way to do that

To avoid future actuator issues, you need to be exercising your locker regularly. If not on gravel, then at very slow speed in a straight line, with no turning. I do mine on a gravel cemetery road every couple of weeks.

To get it to actuate quicker, just give your steering wheel a 1/8th turn to the left and then back to the right the same amount That small steering wheel twist is enough to help it align quicker.

Yeah, I kind of knew in the back of my mind that I wasn't 'exercising' it frequently enough...thanks for the reminder.

I will also try to the steering wheel trick next time I need to engage it quickly.

I use the 'required' exercise in my manual as an an excuse to go out for a day/afternoon =)
