Locking differentials and hood scoops

I thought the locking rear ends were cable actuated? If you take a look at the rear axle, you'll see a lever/rod coming out of the backside of the center part of the axle, with a cable attached to it. Maybe the switch powers an actuator which in turn pulls the cable and locks the diff?

In '97 when we bought our 4Runner, we were told locking rear diffs only came with the stick...maybe our salesman was just BS-ing though...

Aloha!

I believe that's your e-brake cable buddy

Never ever believe a salesman ;) . The rear diff lock is more common with automatics than it is with manual transmissions.

As posted above that is your ebrake cable. The diff lock itself is power by an electric actuator, activated by the switch I posted earlier.

Here is a picture of the inner workings of the diff lock actuator:

They must deliver different rear ends to Hawaii...

I know what the emergency brake looks like. And it connects to the REAR DRIVER SIDE BRAKE then connects (via another cable) TO THE REAR PASSENGER BRAKE AT BOTH ENDS of the axle (not the center like I stated earlier).

This LEVER/ROD is bolted on to something that runs RIGHT THROUGH the axle housing (on the backside of the differential) and is attached to a CABLE.

I'll take a pic and post it later. I've only seen these on '96 - '98s (don't know anyone with a '99+ that has a locking rear diff.) Seen the same thing on the Taco's here too.

BTW, thanks for the pic. Looks like a b!tch to service...

Aloha!

yeah the pic is great. as of that cable you're talking about, I'd need a pic. I have a 98' 4x4 auto with locker. Mine is like the pic.

Yeah, mine's different from your picture.

The parking brake cable bracket" in your picture is about two/three inches below the lever/rod on my locking rear end. (Actually, the lever/rod is closer to the passenger side also, come to think of it...)

I don't have the actuator on the third member (frontside of the diff.) like in the second picture.

Hmmm...

Aloha!

Stupid Question about lockers

I have an 02.....So when I hit the VSC off button, is that not the same as a locker? When I turn, the truck chips and jerks like they are locked..Help me

That's sounds right with the center diff engaged but I'm not exactly sure how it works. With a rear locker it only locks the rear wheels together so they cannot turn independantly. I think with yours it allows minimal travel with all the wheels but it's not truly locking them.

yes, this engages the center diff and disables vsc.

youll still have TRAC to deal with... so thats when you unplug the connection in the engine bay to disengage both vsc and trac :)

VSC off? hmmm... i have an 02 4wd and i dont have a button that says that, when i lock my center diff then a light comes on saying that it is off, is that what yo umean? if that is what you mean then no, your rear tires are not locked together, just your front and rear tires, which will cause your truck to "jump"

yeah, i dont know if i just wasnt awake when i posted, but i could have sworn when i first looked at the thread neither you or RonMAIDEN had replied, and by the time i was done typing you both had replied, answering his question, oh well.... maybe i need to get more sleep.

Ok..now I am really confused. So when I am in 4x4, the wheels spin inependent unless I hit the button that takes VSC off, then that locks the center diff? And when that happens the wheels are kinda locked, but not a true lock? Or is it that it locks the Front and Rear of each side....not the left and right of each axel? And whats the difference between the VSC and TRAC? AWWWWWWWWWWWW.........

When you are in Full-Time 4WD all wheels are powered, but if one wheel starts to spin out all power will go to that wheel and no power will go to the other wheels, leaving you stuck. TRAC will attempt to prevent this by modulating the brakes but does a really sh*tty job. This mode is only intended for street use to make the vehicle a little more stable during icy conditions. As well in this mode VSC (Vehicle Skid Control) will intervene if you start to skid off the road.

By activating the Center Diff Lock you put it in conventional 4WD that has been used on trucks since the dawn of time. It locks the front and rear driveshafts together. Now if one wheel starts to spin out power will still be provided to the other wheels because the driveshafts are locked. This mode is intended for off-road and should not be used on-road as it can cause your drivetrain to break and it makes it very difficult to steer. VSC is dissabled in this mode as you are assumed to no longer be on-road.

This is an extreemly simplified version of things but should give you a general idea for now.

^^^ thats a great post.

essentially, in an 01 or 02, when you hit the 4wd button, you will see the 4 green wheel lights illuminate. this is actually ALL WHEEL DRIVE.

BUT, if one of your front or rear wheels loses traction, it will spin unless trac kicks in. never will both your front or rear wheels stop spinning, unless you break something
