Long shot - Kenwood DDX6703S

This is a longshot question.

I swapped my Entune a couple of years ago with an old Kenwood DNX6140 that I had bought in 2008 and was in my '07 FJ Cruiser for many years. I sold the FJC, put the stock stereo back in before I turned it over, then promptly upgraded my Entune non-JBL system with this unit, 2 amps, speakers, sub box, etc.

I'm considering upgrading the head unit as the tech is dated now (9 years old) and I like the Kenwood DDX6703S. I like the fact that it has better bluetooth functionality, apple carplay, 3 pairs of RCA outputs (front, rear, sub; the DNX6140 only has 2, and the rear can be set to Sub, so you can't fade between front & back speakers), front & rear camera inputs, among other things..

My longshot question is:
Does anyone have one of these DDX6703S? And if so, do you by chance have an iPod Classic plugged into it? Or an iPod Touch 3rd Gen?

The owner's manual has conflicting info.

Pg 22 says that for a 30 pin connector (i.e: old ipod), you need the optional cable KCA-IP102 (which I currently use with the old HU)
Pg 89 only lists iPod Touch 5th & 6th gen as the compatible ones. Both of those have lightning pin connections. So why the comment on Pg 22?

The Kenwood tech support can only tell me what's in the manual...

Just installed the DDX9903S. My understanding is that if you want to have video playback, this only works with the lightning connector. And older iPod 30-pin connector style will work for music playback when connected into the port with the extension cable.

What's your impression of the 9903S so far? I like having the volume knob so I can adjust volume without looking at the stereo. But I would like the bigger screen!

In my old DNX6140 video playback from the ipod is supported with the 30 pin cable. Hmm... Might need to spring for a new ipod if/when I pull the trigger.

I have it in my cruiser. I like the functionality and fact that it has a dedicated cam button, I've got mine wired up so I can swap between front and rear cameras on-demand while driving. Biggest thing I'd recommend is to make sure you maintain your steering wheel controls with it, once you have those it's hard to go back.

I have the steering wheel controls working on the DNX 6140. You are right, i'd hate to lose them.

If it is compatible, definitely get the idatalink maestro. It retains all factory steering wheel controls and connects to the OBDII sensor for advanced readout of TPMS, different sensors etc.

The larger screen is awesome and not having the knobs is okay. It definitely takes some getting used to when pushing the buttons but the steering wheel controls help. I should point out that this is actually in my finance's FJ but since it is a similar setup, they will work the same. Also, being able to have carplay/android auto, advanced telemetry, etc was worth it.

CarPlay always needs the lightning connected plugged in. I have that in 2 of my trucks and bluetooth works too for music/phone/siri but not for CarPlay.
