Hi all, could definitely use some advice/ideas

In the next couple months, I'll be moving for grad school (MBA program in NYC). While it's not permanent, my truck will be staying at my parents' place. Unfortunately, their garage is totally full, so the truck will be parked outside. I won't be able to get home more than once every 2-3 weeks, so I'm concerned about the potential for paint damage.

I was thinking of having it coated with ceramic pro, but I have no experience with that in this type of situation. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this will protect the paint from things like salt and bird droppings for a couple weeks at a time if I'm unable to get to it? Likewise, I'm totally open to suggestions.

Definitely thought about this, but my parents didn't want the "eyesore" outside the house if I could help it, so right now it's a last resort. Just out of curiosity, what cover did you get for your '07?
 
The coating will only help so much and it would be best practice to remove droppings and salt if possible.

I too have resorted to covers in addition to coating to also help with UV ray protection as mine sit for longer periods. Honestly the coverking covers i bought autobody armor they blend pretty well with surroundings.
 
Definitely, I always try to remove droppings and salt wherever possible. But given my schedule, I know it'll be tough to try and get home to take care of it constantly. I really wanted to know the abilities of the coating, which is what I'm having a tough time figuring out.

If they let me go the car cover route, that's definitely preferable. That way I can breathe a little easier when I'm not there and wash it when I come back.
 
I would be worried about mice, squirrels, rats, and other things finding a nice dry home under your hood. Once there they love the air box, fresh air vent into the cab. While painting my 04 I cleaned a nest out of inside my frame. The PO parked it in an airplane hanger most of its life.
Then do all the gas treatments, battery tender, to keep everything good to go later.

I have yet to catch on to Ceramic coating for
1) my rig is too old
2) it can get pricey

Look into Collinte 845 if you're concerned about the paint and finish. Put on a few coats before it gets too cold. Stuff gets me thru MN winters with power washes as needed.
 
I know the main concern is with paint, however, is it true that dryer sheets and steel wool help to deter rodents and other animals from taking up residency? They move in quick :lasercannon: Also, if you can, I would put the truck up on jack stands for an additional measure. Good thread though, I was curious about paint protection as well
 
While it'd take more effort and cost - dip it.

Then when you get it back just peel it off and all is well. Definitely put it on stands and maybe get some tire covers as well.
 
Wash well remove all salty deposits and dirt, Paint seal / wax with McGuire's synthetic paint sealer, good for a year; the best quality; its expensive but works $30-50 bucks for a reg size, that what the dealerships use; mothers has a cheaper synthetic paint sealer wax. then add cover. Rustproof / spray with wd40 where possible.

Then run with gas stabilizer in fuel tank, fill with ethanol free gas (it degrades faster and attracts moisture) inflate tires to max,disconnect battery or put on tender. Run & take for a spin every time your there. Clean before storage. Make sure there's no water leaks into the interior.

Consider film coating as much of the weathered parts of the vehicle.

Rodent protection is advisable too; no joke ...

When you come back you'll be happy to see her run and look good too.
