Looking for Liftgate support lifts

I need to replace the gas Liftgate struts. The OEM ones look to be $150 ea. on line. I of course started to shop on line some more. Anyone that has already replaced theirs . I'm open to all ideas. Thanks T4R I'm a new member here, but a 15 year owner of my 98 LE.
My OEM's state a LH,RH , does it matter?

Thanks Socco, did you reuse your old hardware? It looks like there is a rubber grommet at the top. Mine looks pretty dried out and brittle.
I take it that new hardware is not going to be part of any order.
 
You dont get any hardware with the struts. I just reused my old ones and it worked just fine.

Well, it rarely gets below 14F around here so our winter experiences may vary. Still, even at 32 it has no problem going all the way up.
 
Are they supposed to lift as soon as the latch is released or are you supposed to help it start the lift and then they take over? Mine are a little sluggish at first but after I nudge the gate for about maybe the first 2" - 3" or so it lifts fine after that. Is that normal? I have hood supports coming in now, mine do not work at all. I found that out the day I test drove it while it was still on the lot. It wasn`t a deal breaker tho but it was almost a neck breaker lol.

Good to know; even when it gets around 40 or so, they start to sag and you have to 'duck inside' or stay outside or you get bonked. LOL
 
I gave in to sending mine to Strutwise in BC, CA. I see on Toyota parts lists there are two order numbers. One is for cold weather .

Well after talking with Frank at Strutwise . He told me the OEM strut Dia. is 12.5 mm and the aftermarket ones are 10 mm. That may or may not have something to do with it. He also said the OEM are a much better strut to start with.

So I'm going with having him rebuild mine at twice the price. Around 48.00 US ea.

I should be receiving them any day now. There is a bit of a turn around time involved . So if you need them in less than two or three weeks.

I also sent him the attached mounting brackets . That way he would have ago at replacing the bushing material ( rubber grommet) .

How did the rebuild by Strutwise work out?
 
The reading I have done suggests I need not waste my time or $ on aftermarket. My lift gate is several pounds heavier than stock due to thorough sound dampening. Aftermarket struts struggle even with stock weight, according to many reviews.
 
I put the Monroes on my lift-gate, and I'm really happy with them. They seem a little stronger than the stock ones, but the gate doesn't "fly" up or seem impossible to close like some others have experienced. They just work... Reused original mounting hardware.

My Strutwise rebuilds are everything Frank said they would be. When you release the handle it pops right open to the top . It takes a lot of down force to pull down the liftgate now. I wish it had an electric pull down now. In the past winter there was no cold weather sagging.
If your money is tight ,or you live in a warm weather state. You might be able to get away without the cost of the rebuilt ones.
