Looking for mod Dome light for footwell

Hey guys! Has anyone done a led tie in from dome light to footwell/running board lighting? I've searched with results from 3rd/4th gens but not 5th.
I would like to install footwell /running board led lights to come on same as dome light with the fade no switch

I know it is ground activated with power but would like to see what others have tied into.

I've been searching some more and looks like the Tacoma World folks have done this a few times. I believe the Tacomas are ground switched like the 4runners.

To trigger the LED with the open door command the tie is to the dome circuit ground switch. So the negative wire from the LED strip gets tied into the ground wire of the dome light. I've already switched out the dome light to a LED so the amp draw is reduced. I found the illumination diagram for the T4R.
and the connector diagram.

Can anyone tell me the easiest place to tie in to the dome ground wire? It looks to be 2D pin 33 on the connector. I've pulled out the driver's side A pillar as an option but everything in there seems very tight to work with...

On my 09 Tacoma I tied into a blue wire in the driver side front pillar which was negative. Positive went right to power. The wires are very tight. No slack whatsoever. Don't know if our runners have same wiring color. There were two blue wires if I remember right it was light blue I tapped into,other one was darker blue.

Thanks for the info. Do your lights come on with door open chime/dome light and fade out?

Yes they did. I don't have truck anymore. Got the directions on Tacoma World forum. I had those lights that shined the Toyota emblem on the ground when you opened the doors. Got them off eBay.

Well I found an access point for cabling on the passenger side. It goes straight into the cabin and comes up under the carpet. There are other rubber grommets below but this one is more direct.

I found the illumination drawings for the 5th gen. Can anyone offer insite on the dome light ground wire? SU1 p17/p32? View attachment Interior Light (2010 4Runner) .pdf

It seems the best access would be through the A pillar. I used that route for my dash cam wire, it's very easy to remove. Disconnect the negative battery cable wait ten minutes and pry the bolt cover off with a panel removal tool. I think I used a 10mm socket to remove the bolt.

I installed 12v leds in my footwell and under my seats, and its tied to my interior light and only stays on when I turn on my lights. BTW LED cant fade unless you have resistors

What colour lights did you use and what year is your T4R? Do you recall where you tied in the LED wires and which ones you tied into?

I see you have a 2011. Really want to have the fade feature, will have to look into that.

sorry for the late reply, I used red LEDs and I tied the LED to the shifter light. Its much easier to get to and less hassle than trying to wiring it to the dimmer switch plus when wiring them out you want it to be parallel so that all LED have the same power coming into them and also when you have a blown LED you can see which one it is vs when you have it in series the more LED you add the less power the last LED will get and when one blows you will have to go through each one to find the dead one.

To make the LED auto dim, you will need to create a circuit board or buy this Oznium LED Dimmer and Strobe Remote Switch to get what you want to achieve. You will need to connect the power to your dome light..

Getting the power from the dome light won't make it dim out. The ground wire does that somehow. The only problem with that setup is op want lights to come on when you open door and not have to turn on light switch. I have to look at mine and see what the wiring looks like in the pillar. I did this mod in my Tacoma.

thanks for the reply. I'm also looking at adding a led to the cupholder by tying into shifter. I just can't decide on a color as I have 2015 with blue/white interior lights. I'm hoping to tie to dimmer ground somehow. Good call on hooking up in parallel I will keep that in mind.

I believe you're right. You have to tie to ground and that is what triggers the light. Others have stated that resistors maybe necessary ...

Page 5 of the T4R wiring diagram above has pin 2B wire 33 as -'ve from ECU to the ignition key cylinder light. I think that is where I need tie into to have fade work.
