looking for nuts!

Hey Guys,

I am going to tackle the O2 sensor + A/F sensor this weekend. Can these nuts - stainless M8-1.25 nut - be found locally i.e., NAPA, autozone, or even a hardware store?

Thanks Much!

You can buy those nuts at a hardware store usually in stainless. My A/F sensor is held on by stainless nuts. Put some anti-seize on them.

Stainless is weaker than steel. It might gall up upon removal.

I agree with your statements but not the conclusion. The OEM nuts are stainless (p/n 90179-08059). The originals were corroded almost to dust when I changed my sensors a few years ago. Galling would be a minor issue. The good news is the studs are much harder and corrosion-resistant than the nuts. I could just crush the nuts into pieces and clean up the studs with a wire brush and start fresh. I'd worry that steel nut on steel stud would be too hard to get off.

Things might be different outside the salt belt but I'd stick to stainless. They don't cost that much at the dealer if one is close to you.

Actually, when I needed the same size nuts for the rear bumper replacement, I went to the dealer and they ordered them. It seems they no longer routinely stock many parts for 3rd gen 4Runners. It took three days to get the nuts and they were over $12, not to mention two trips to the dealer. I got stainless nuts from Lowes for the O2 sensor and they were very cheap. I think they were 45 cents each. And no waiting.

Listed dealer price is $2.13. They give me 20% off because they know me. So a little less than $4 for a sensor. My dealer doesn't stock much either, but gets almost everything the following day. I pre-order by phone so I don't waste a trip. It depends on what options you have available. I only use the dealer for small unique items where the shipping is a killer.
