Looking For Opinion's 4th Gen to 5th

Hey all,

I am guessing some of of had V8 4th gens prior to stepping up to a 5th. My question is do you miss the 4th gen and the sweet v8?

I am looking at an incoming TRD Pro at the local dealership and drove a sr5 that was nice but really seemed to lack the get up and go that I am used to.
Will I miss the get up and go or will the truck perform decently once broken in and able to use more throttle? (lots of snow on the ground when test driving.)

I currently have an 03 sport with 161k miles on it and frame/hatch rust issues.

I miss my 03 V8 every time I drive my 2014. The 2014 sounds like some piece of farm machinery compared to my old V8. I also miss the great V8 low end torque. The new V6 is adequate but definitely boring more like an appliance.

Please keep your V8. You will not be happy just like this guy lol. The 4th gen was the most perfect vehicle ever lol. And... no burger tray!

Other than 03_4x4, you'd only be the second one to make the switch and ask that question. Dump that rusty iron pig and get on with it man.

Move on. I had the same struggle. I had plans on running it for another 100k but I love my '15 4Runner TE. Nothing squeaks or rattles. I feel confident and safe driving long distance. I had a '07 Limited with a V6. Rust was killing it. Exhaust. Brakes. Bearings. Rear hatch latch. Wheels wouldn't hold air. But I believe the '07 V6 was actually more powerful and faster than my current but I'm loving the amenities of a NEW truck.

Absolutely not more powerful. It is pretty close on torque, a few hundred pounds lighter, and 1" smaller tires will make it feel a lot faster.

I am thinking new is the way to go. Up here the going rate is high for a used runner and I am certainly diging the orange of the pro. What do you guys think the resale will be like on a TRDP better or worse than a base SR5? I hate being undecided it just sucks to drop a ton of cash on a new runner mid cycle and not knowing what is coming.

That's because Toyota vehicles have the highest residual value of any manufacturer with select vehicles. I cannot find the ratings but if I remember correctly the 4Runner is around 70% of list after three years and 50% of list after five years (10 Cars That Retain Their Value When You Sell in Five Years - Pg.6 - TheStreet) and ranks them right at the top in value.

I would think generally that condition will matter more over time than model type, even with a vehicle that has a limited run such as the TRD Pro. I am saying that as a percentage of list price. Remember that desirable features that were included when the vehicle is new are usually not so desirable when the vehicle has aged. I cite the 8-Track tape player for example.

I had the same question regarding resale on the TRDP - I was between the TEP and the TRDP. After selling my Taco for just about what I paid for it after two years of use and 40k miles, resale was a big deal for me and big reason why I was drawn back to buying a Toyota. I pulled the trigger on a '15 TEP (partly because the TRDP I had my eye on sold). I mulled over this question and I would say that after realizing the "limited-ness" and the uniqueness of the TRDP, I believe that if you were to head into the dealer wanting to trade it in they will give you top dollar for it. Also, as it stands now, I haven't seen a "used" TRDP for sale and the ones that are barely used (<3k miles) are selling for just about MSRP.

As for the v8 power vs. v6 power - The '15 seemed a big sluggish to me (compared to my '09 Tacoma TRD Sport) - after driving it a while, the throttle mapping adjusted to my style and started to have a bit more pep. Obviously your not going to replace the V8 power with a V6, but in my opinion, the newer tech/feel of the 5th Gen is worth it (plus $2/gallon won't be forever).

Cheers

if you like the 4th gen and can afford it keep it and get a 5th gen also. I still have my 3rd gen, 4th gen, and now a 5th gen. Can't seam to part with them. LOL.

fellow Mainer, and former '06 V8 SE owner here. i had questions and reservations at first, and while the dual VVTi 1GR-FE can't match the low end grunt of the 2UZ-FE, i don't have any regrets whatsoever. love my Trail. my niece bought my '06, so i still see it from time to time—still no regrets.
