Hello, I currently own a second gen 4 runner and looking to upgrade to a 4th gen one. The one's in my area are usually V8. My current 94 is a V6. It is weak and a gas hog. What are your thoughts on the 4th gen (2004-2005) 4th gen V8's. Is it a mistake, should I look for a V6? Any known problems that I may be able to identify at the time of purchase that should steer me away from it? The truck I am gonna get is gonna have about 120-140K miles on it.

Given the cost of gas, I'd go with the V6. While the mpg is only a few mpg (at best) better than the V8, at $4/gallon every bit helps.
I've put about 115,000 miles on my V8 and I love the low-end torque. But I'm only getting about 15 mpg on daily commute and that is painful.
One thing to watch out for is an oil leak on the transfer case actuator. From what I understand, it is caused by a $5 o-ring that has gone bad, but it can cost up to $1000 to fix.

I have an 05 Limited V8 that is NOT 4WD, it's 2wd. It is a gas hog, even on the highway, but I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. I had a v6 3rd gen before this and definitely love the increased power and torque.
If the one you get is 4WD make sure you switch it into 4LO to make sure the actuator is working properly. As mentioned above, it is an expensive fix for a basic issue.
Also you can check maintenance records on the toyota owner's website using the VIN.

Gas mileage is not a huge issue for me, i just want to make sure that if I get the V8, at least the power and TQ bump is worth it. I am going to take to a trusted experienced mechanic ofcourse, just want to eliminate obvious bad apples before taking the time to make the drive.

I've seen many a thread on here regarding V6 vs. V8 and pro's/con's. If I were you and you can get a solid deal on a V8, I'd go for that, no doubt. You won't regret it.

I never drove a V6 4th gen, but I love the power and torque of my V8. I wouldn't trade it for anything. As for gas mileage, I don't feel my 05 is a gas hog. I am getting 17-18 on the highway and 16 on the streets. I use 89 fuel. I am not sure if you know, but the 05 V8's are slightly different than the 04's- VVTi was added which improved fuel consumption and the hp/tq numbers are different.

Just a heads up if your planning to lift it, avoid the adjustable rear air suspension - the chassis mounts are different and there's no kits made for it. The XREAS system is nice, but again, no lifts are compatable with it other then simple spacers so it has to be removed. As for the V8 - yes, its worth every penny
