Looking to buy a new 4Runner

Hey guys, I'm new to 4Runners but not Toyota. I currently drive a 2008 FJ. We went to Seattle yesterday and looked at a 2010 White 4Runner Limited for my wife which was the last 2010 on the lot. It was fully loaded with Nav and 3rd Row seat and stickered at 44k. The lowest I could get them was 42k. This seems high for a 2010. I'm active military and my bank is USAA. USAA's car buying service said the most I should pay for a 2011 with the same options is $40,5000 so I thought I should get a better deal on a 2010. Thanks for the help. Am I out of line here?

Here's a shameless plug for my FJ with 3" Toytec lift and 34's.

The 42 large you mentioned is whacked. Invoice is around $39,200 - and according to Edmunds "True Market Value", the number average is $39,867. Why are Toyota dealers so @#$%'in difficult to work with? I don't get it.

My Limited w/ nav (no 3rd row) was 38 large and some change.

Good luck.

They probably know they have one of the last ones in the area. If they want to sell it they will let it go for 39k. Invoice is NOT what the dealer pays for the car. So regardless they will make money on it. I would get quotes from the other dealers. Then go back to them all and say match or I buy from your competitor.

It helps to talk with the sales manager directly.

Thanks guys, I thought was out of touch there for a minute. When they said 42k I countered with 39k and they didn't even give me a counter offer. We are hitting two other dealerships today and will see how it goes.

i brought my 10' sr5 in august. the sticker was 37k. i found one dealership willing to sell at 33k. i didnt want to buy from them but they were the one willing to play the game and get paid. i went back to the other dealers and basically begged them to match and neither would. so i went and picked up my 4r for 33k.

went to the other dealer a couple months later to get chimes turned off and saw the sales guy there. he asked if i wanted to look at the 4r again. i told him i already bought one for the amount we discussed earlier. he looked sad lol

in the end a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. go check out some other dealers. go back to the one, ask for the sales manager. just tell him that you are buying a 4runner today. if you sell to me at 39k i will sign right now. otherwise i will go to (state name of dealer) and purchase it off their lot. but tell them you would rather buy from them. they are not going to sell a 10' for 42k when you can buy an 11' for 42k somewhere else...

Try Toyota of Lake City. Their lot is currently under construction but they have 4Runners for sale. Their inventory shows a white LE with 3rd Row, too.

Wes, before you head to the dealer, call them.

1. Ask for the Internet Manager.
2. Tell him/her you are ready to buy today.
3. Ask for $1,000 under invoice.

Buying cars is pretty easy these days. Some dealers will not play ball and are jerks but you should find some that want to move metal now. Just don't buy anything in the finance office (rustproof, gap insurance, window etching, warranty, etc.) because even if it is a worthwhile product, it is far overpriced there. If you have great credit, you might be able to get ~3.7% from BofA (or any other major bank, even Toyota. You just have to ask.) Good luck.

Just so you guys know, in our area, that thing would pull sticker price all day long. You're lucky to get anything lower than sticker here in NY. My sticker was 46k, paid 44,100. I had the 3rd 11 BP LE NAV/TAN/3rd row in the US. So I'm sure I paid a little more than I should have, but I ordered it from japan the way I wanted it.

Wes, I got my loan through BofA for 2.89% for 60 months yesterday. Also, don't by ANYTHING from the finance dept (Like Larry says). I was quoted 1,500 for a 8yr 100k warranty toyota warranty and bought it from Midwest Superstore Toyota in Hutchinson, KS today for $1039. 800-530-5789. Ask for Jerry.

Wes,

I also bank through USAA. If you can wait for delivery (6 weeks or so) go through their car buying service. It will get you the best price out there. I tried the old "Well I can get this price from my bank, can you match it?".

Fact of the matter is, Dealerships HATE those car buying services. I actually had a saleswoman in N.C. flat out tell me they won't honor the agreement becuase the price is too low. By the way, the dealership signed a contract with USAA. I DID report them to USAA and they were shocked. Don't know what came of it, but whatever.

Long story short, I ended up buying a 2010 LTD in BP white that had 2K on the odometer. We needed the new vehicle NOW at that point. IFwe could have waited for delivery, I would've just gone through the USAA service and gotten almost the same price on a brand new one.

Thanks for everyone's advice. For those speaking of the USAA car buying service, I tried using it at the first dealership and they wouldn't honor it. They said USAA's pricing is wrong even though I optioned the LE exactly as it sat on their lot and according to the sticker from their website. I'll be calling USAA on Monday to let them know.

I went to a different dealers website today and did the same thing then emailed the quote to the sales manager. I received a phone call 30 minutes later from the sales manager who said he had a White 2010 LE with Nav and 3rd row seating and he would beat the USAA quote if I bought today. When we got to the dealership the sales manager met us at the front door with a starting quote of $39,900 minus a $1000 military rebate and a $1000 match your down payment rebate (1k was the max they would match) which brought the price down to 37,900. They were spot on with our trade in according to KBB so we took the deal. We ended up financing through Toyota because they had a better interest rate than USAA.

I might have been able to haggle a little more but after a month of searching I was just spent. We test drove the Acura RDX and MDX (my wife is partial to Acura as her trade in was a TL Type S), the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Sorento (I know, I know), Toyota Highlander, 4Runner and the Ford Explorer. We could of had a 2010 Limited Explorer with V8, Nav, Rear entertainment system, power steps and 3rd row seats for 37k but my wife liked the looks of the 4Runner more. Yes gentlemen it came down to purely looks, not safety, not reliability and not performance. I know in the end she made the right choice but I almost wish she would have picked the Explorer or Acura because her vehicle will be pretty much be limited to soccer Mom duty. Seems like an injustice after seeing all the off road gadgets this thing has compared to my FJ.

My favorite quote over this last month in reference to the Kia:

"No I don't like this one because the color of the turn signal indicator is ugly"

Ok guys I'm done ranting and thanks again for everyones help. I'll post up some pictures tomorrow if it isn't raining.

Mike,

We ended up going with Toyota of Burien. Great little dealership with a small town feel. They were serious about selling cars and closed on about five other vehicles in the few hours I was there. Nothing like the dealership downtown that acted like selling a vehicle was a burden.

I'm glad you found one. Lake City was the only one I found willing to place an order to get what I wanted. Burien told me to come in for a TE test drive and then sold it before I got there, Kirkland told me what I wanted was impossible, Magic told they would only sell what was on the lot, and that place downtown acted like I was wasting their time trying to spend $40k. I can relate to your experience and I'm glad you got a great deal, but I'm really glad you didn't buy at Kirkland or Bellevue.

go away from the seatac area, especially being military. they WILL hose you. try the toyota guys in Yakima (yea, its a drive, but it gets you away from the idiots....and the sales tax is cheaper)

Hi,

I am working on a deal for a SR5 w/leather package, dimming rear mirror and sun roof(I don't want) sticker is 38,094 priced at 33,976($250 over invoice). This is w/no hassel from the internet sales manager. We are having a heated discussion about the trade in...So what else is new. Your quoted price is way to high..try the internet sales quote program..this will work in your favor. Good luck.

Thanks but already worked out a deal with another dealer. Ended up paying about $700 over invoice. Not the best deal out there but it was good enough for me. Keep haggling on the trade in. That's where the dealers can pocket some serious money.
