Lost my 5th gen to another buyer at the dealership

We were at the dealership yesterday for 3.5 hours and almost had a deal on a blizzard pearl limited. I was undecided and they offered to let me drive her home overnight with no obligation. As I was getting my insurance card they told me it was sold to another person. Ouch. I think I would've ended up buying it. This one was a 4x4 but in Atlanta I don't really need that, so I think I'm going to have them do a swap on a 4x2 in Savannah so I'll save some money this way.

I had them down to 36.9K for the 4x4 (MSRP of 43.6), so I'm going to say I want the 4x2 for 33.9 since its MSRP is 3k less. It kind of sucks because it'll have ~300 miles when it's delivered, but that seems like a good deal regardless. I'm trading in my 06 SR5 and am stoked to have all the bells and whistles this time around. It's been a great car. I plan on powdercoating the wheels black and tinting the front wheels for the storm trooper look. I'm pretty excited and my wife is sick of hearing about it so I thought I'd unload on you guys, hah.

I had a 2WD Tacoma before I had my 4WD Runner because I said the same thing, I won't use the 4 wheel drive that much. Now that I have it I am glad to have it for wheeling and the snow.

Just be sure that you really won't regret not getting the 4WD, then enjoy the limited!

I would go else where to buy.
If you were dealing on that 4runner, and they sold to someone else, someone wasnt paying attention in that you were dealing on it, or someone else was dealing first and didnt tag the 4runner.
just what i think

Edited: $37K for a 2012 Limited?? They have to be giving you less for your trade. I haven't seen anyone get anywhere near that price on here, nor edmunds. Wow. Dealers here in Arizona aren't budging much lower than that price on 2010 Limited's with 20K+ miles.

I agree that's ridiculously crazy low...

At the last minute before signing papers u should tell them u decided to keep ur trade in and instead give them the cash amount they were giving u for ur trade in. Curious what they say/do lol

:jaw drop::jaw drop:

WOW! 30 min in my max to deal (not including the paperwork or test drive). My time is better spent doing something, or anything, else. Maybe someone else test drove it earlier or the day before, came back to make the deal. Some customers are easy sales, some make it 'harder'. The dealership will sell it to the 1st person who put the $$$ down. For all they knew you were going to take it home for the night and return in the next day and say it is not what you wanted. Even you said you were undecided and you think you may have bought it. If they had someone there who said they WANTED it and were ready to sign they are going with that party. There are too many 'tire kickers' out there and places don't want to loose sales. If I was going to spend 3.5 hours dealing there would be NO reason to take it home for a test, I only invest that much time into something I know I want. I do feel for you, 3.5 hours of he!! for nothing, sucks. 4x2 might be your better option, but just think resale value as well, your 4R will only have a market on southern pavement, just keep that in mind.

I got my 12' LE from Flagstaff for under $40k Out the Door...........Just saying!

With 40 otd bay's price must have been right around 37.5 as well. I haven't heard from them yet (they're not open) but I'll post an update once I do.

Nah. The other guy didn't have them down as far as you. Plus, they gave him the "someone else is bidding on this truck" line of encouragement.

Likely, the same new car manager was handling both decisions. In the car biz, they go for the deal that will close and/or bring the better profit. It's pretty simple really. You just got unlucky.

Basically you did not get a 4Runner because you did not offer enough money to secure the purchase and the seller accepted another offer right? What is the issue?

Lost my 4Runner today

You cannot lose what you do not have! In the future do your research and find out what the new vehicle is selling for in your region and do the same for your trade. Use the internet to make your offer and if they want to sell for what you are willing to pay, give them a credit card deposit over the phone. That way the deal is sealed. If you are spending that much time at a dealership haggling over a car they are not serious about the sale. Take control of the purchase, do not let them take control. You lose and have to start over again somewhere else. If they do not want to do an internet deal there are plenty of other dealers who will. I own a new 4Runner and a new Lexus LS and bought both of them out of state. The dealers in my area do not want to deal. I have tried over the years and it was a waste of time. Also, you should try selling your car outright to a private individual as you can usually get a far better price than you can on a trade. Dealers usually offer you about what they are selling for at the local auction lot and that is wholesale or less.

Exactly. No big surprise. Yet another reason never to fall in love with a deal until it's 100% done. They will do whatever makes them the most money and nobody really cares about building a relationship these days...it's just the way of the world today sadly.

Sounds to me like someone realized they were too skinny on your deal and either killed it or someone really did pay more. Yeah - slimy way to behave, but they are car salesmen after all.

One word - "Next!"

They told me when I was tossing numbers back and forth that someone else was looking at it but I didn't believe them. In any event I really wasn't 100% sure of the deal as I really didn't want to pay for 4x4.

I ended up pulling the trigger on the BP 4x2 limited for 34.5 w/ rubber mats. I'm selling my old one myself via craigslist or ebay motors if I don't get any bites after a while on craiglist. I'm really excited and can't wait to pick it up tomorrow after work.

Glad you found another one, the one you really wanted! I use the above line a lot....only when it is true....and (not surprisingly) not many people believe it until they call back only to find an offer has been accepted or it has already been sold. It tends to be the men who walk away and want to come back after thinking about it, only to find it sold, and a very unhappy wife who says 'I told you just to get it!' (I don't deal with cars).
