I like the rugged look and features of the Trail but I have no use nor do I wish to pay for the 4WD. I wish they'd offer the Trail trim in a 2WD.
Love the look of the Trail, don't need 4x4

A 2wd Trail Edition would seem like a bit of an oxymoron. I'm sure that 99.999% of all Trail Edition buyers would not consider a 2wd version, so it's not surprising that Toyota wouldn't equip them that way.
Well it seems as though the Trail Edition is kind of sort of the replacement for the 4th gen "Sport Edition". In other words it seems like it's gonna be one of their main trim levels for the 5th gen (unlike on the 4th gen '09 when the Trail Edition was a VERY low production type of thing with standard rear locker). And Toyota did offer the 4th gen Sport Edition in 4x2 (see for example the Hawaii cop thread where it seems to be the T4R of choice over there). Actually, even the original 3rd gen models that came with the scoop (Highlander and Sport) were available in 4x2 (and quite popular at least where I live).
So I think that's what the OP was getting at - he wants a hood scoop. I would think though that if they're gonna call something a "Trail Edition" that they would all be 4x4 and I'm pretty sure that's all that the TE is going to be offered in at least according to the info on the '10. However, it would not surprise me if they do offer it in 4x2 for those folks who just want the hood scoop. If they did that though I would recommend they change the name from Trail Edition and call it "Sport Edition" for the 4x2 versions.

You've pretty much summed up my thoughts. The SR5 looks a little basic and bland to me and I'd never consider a Limited but I don't need all of the 4WD functionality of the Trail. I just want the Trail's cosmetics.
