Since mine is an 03, I'm going to tap into the wire under the glove box cover and run it over to the existing blue plug that leads to nothing and then tap it into that. So it will be in the left side by the center diff lock.

I've read that whole thread repeatedly but for some reason no matter how many times I read it I can't seem to fully grasp of nuances when it comes to turning the button on, then back off, or turning the car off while it's on, etc. Plan to finally pull the trigger and tap my wires this weekend myself.

I've read all the threads at least 10 times. There's so much info there it's almost overwhelming. To my understanding it's basically a grounding interruption when you turn the switch on. I am trying to think of a way to wire a relay that would cycle the power of I some reason forget to turn off the interruption to not confuse the system. But I may just straight wire it for now until I figure the relay out. I'll document what I do and how the result is.

You don't have to restart the vehicle to return to normal. You just have to click off the switch and it will go back to normal.

Which mod are you doing? As far as I know and through all the hours of research I did prior to doing this mod, once VSC is tripped, it requires a restart to re-engage since the mod shorts the system during the self test and requires the recycle to engage once it passes the self test. Thanks.

The fingers are crossed for the on/off without a engine restart but from research I've read, Morphious is correct...Keep us posted and I'm anxious to make this work and use it!

The type i am doing is below

I completed the VSC-off mod on my T4R. The cool thing about this mod is the ATRAC is still active.

A great thank-you to Andries at T120. This is his hard work not mine.

What it's like after the mod is complete:
In 2wd dash lights are on (VSC & Diff lock). I didn't mess around enough to decide if VSC is working, traction control IS working; I'm assuming it has full VSC. It has all the familiar noises and accompanying reduction in power. The system seems to get confused if you attempt to change from 2HI to 4HI with the switch on. Lights get stuck in flash mode.

In 4HI it works as advertised :bigok: You have an unlocked Torsen center diff and no interference from the VSC; the VSC and Diff Lock light are on. You can definitely feel/hear ATRAC doing it's thing. The same deal in 4LO... I can lock and unlock the diff while in 4HI (or 4LO) with my switch on. It locks & unlocks ok. When unlocked the diff lock light continues to flash even after the diff unlocks. It is not a perfect mod. It beats the heck out what Toyota gave from the factory. I am thrilled! :bigok:

My advice is to not do a mode change with the added VSC switch on (grounding the wire). I may retract/amend that as I learn more. For now I plan to lock and unlock the diff, switch 4HI to 4LO with my added VSC switch in the off (ungrounded or open) position.

The bottom line is it's a great mod that facilitates the use of 4HI and 4LO without VSC interference and the center diff unlocked.

Andries saved me thousands! I was having serious 'VSC-off' envy of the 2008 guys!:lmao:

Below are some how-to pics Battery should be disconnected for this procedure! There's a TSB that discusses the risks; basically disconnect the battery. Do not turn or change 4wd mode knob until it's all back together and powered up.

You can't see it but I put a couple of connectors on the switch wires also so that I can take the dash apart later without pulling and/or cutting wires.

I have had no reset issues thusfar. I have it in for a while now. There's no need to shut the vehicle off or anything other change the switch position.

Perfect info, this is the mod for you 4wd guys and sounds like there is no need at all for a restart. All my research was for 2wd so the way for us to accomplish this mod is a bit different.

this is exactly what i plan to do tomorrow morning. For those also wanting to do this same mod to a V8.

First off, thanks for all the great information in this thread. I've been running the basic version of this mod which was detailed in the original post on my '04 Limited V8 for a few months now, and it works great.

I'm now looking to ditch my radioshack toggle switch and utilize the blue connector behind the dash for a stock look, like SSt4r detailed in his post. I already bought the VSC Off and modified it to work as an on/off using Gaterose's instructions and then realized that my '04 doesn't have the skid control ecu in that easily accessible place under the hood...

I'm not really familiar with the location of the skid control on my year, so I was thinking about trying the following instead of going digging for it.

- Cut red/white wire at the empty blue connector in dash
- Disconnect my original toggle switch
- Take my wire from toggle switch (which is tapped into red/purple at 4x4ecu under glovebox) and splice it with red/white one for the blue connector
(essentially accomplishing this... hopefully)

I got off early today so I went ahead and tackled this.

Remove the glove box and the single screw to access the 4x box.

Find the blue with violet wire and tap into it however you wish.

This is what it looked like when I opened the driver side lower panel.

Cut the red and white wire as I have to have the wire I just tapped on the passenger side connect to this red/white wire before the plug.

Run the wire from the passenger side to the driver side and clean up the wiring and tape what you need and start buttoning the paneling back.

Backlit like OEM.

I've driven around with it off. As long as you turn it off before turning the car off you're golden.

Holy smokes you don't even have the false diff-lock light...either you just became (more) legendary, or I missed something in all my reading about that not being an issue after all...I shall try this tomorrow! (albeit I think I'll be up under the hood with the '06, we shall see)

Nothing different. I tapped the red and violet wire like shown and ran that wire to the red/white wire on the existing switch and plugged my switch in and there you have it.

Yes. That's all my switch is doing, just looks OEM.

This might sound stupid, but you've connected the red/violet wire to the red/white wire coming out of the plug/switch, right? Then you just taped and secured the remaining, unconnected portion of the red/white wire that goes deeper into the dash?
