Made an air intake!

Well, I've got to say so far I'm pretty happy with this. The stock intake is fine itself but with those "baffles" on the back of the intake, it screamed 'holy restricted airflow!' Anyways, about $40-50, got a better sound for sure. Haven't gotten it out to see about performance but I'm sure it's very little.

Kept the stock airbox so no worries with the MAF and got all the breathers connected with a kit from autozone.

Those "baffles" would be resonance chambers. They exist for the purpose of quieting the incoming air at given frequencies, and have nearly no effect on air flow characteristics. I'm happy for you though.
 
If that tubing you used is metal as it appears, you just made things worse. Aluminum is an extraordinary conductor of heat. You just turned the intake into a giant heatsink with the hot radiator air flowing over it.

Plastic is a great insulator, and in turn helps maintain a cooler environment for the incoming air.
 
Well, on the plus side, a hotter charge of air *could* increase fuel efficiency, but you definitely wont see additional power at full throttle.
 
IMHO, (I previously spent many years squeezing power out of fuel injected motors)

There is no way heat would transfer and make any real difference in this setup.....

You might notice a rise in IAT at idle conditions, but it will clean right up once the throttle is open.

For NA applications, the smoothed hard pipe won't make any real perf difference. Now, if if you also shortened it a bunch..... I've witnessed that make some noticeable gains.
 
I would also be concerned about the amount of flex (or lack thereof) that the silicon tubing has. When the engine accelerates, the motor mounts allow for a small amount of movement. I would double check that your intake won't yank the air box from the fender or become disconnected under hard acceleration, both in drive and reverse.

It should be fine. I've done similar setups many times and never had a problem unless running a decent amount of boost. Then the hoses and clamps become pretty stressed.

Sorry for the late response, the tubing is actually plastic. It's just 'chrome' painted or whatnot. There were metal tubes but I had the same thought of metal being no Bueno. And thanks, I knew the air intakes on the market are debatable in if they're worth it or not so that's why I wanted to make one myself. I'm just always trying to do things myself, pretty happy with the results even if it is just for looks and a bit of sound from the intake.

If you are going for looks, washing that engine bay would go a long way.

did you chrome paint it yourself or buy it like that? if you did it yourself then i want to know what brand paint you used cause ive never seen a rattle can do that.

Does this require any mods or is it an "exact" replacement for the 2011 stock tube?
 
Just looked at the pipe a bit. It apparently will not work, as it has a port to mount the MAF meter, and the stock box also has a port. I guess I could come up with a way to seal off the MAP port on the tube...
