I think if folks are comparing this system to stock, (which is near silent), and expecting just a slightly louder tone they are going to be disappointed.

The system is moderately loud. There is a band of RPM on the highway that the helmholtz resonator was tuned to reduce drone. That being approximately 2300-2600 RPM. Anywhere outside of that RPM range is going to be very audible.

With that said, I also find this system to be a bit too loud for my liking. I will be adding a Vibrant quiet resonator to the system once my high clearance bumper goes on. This resonator will be positioned just medial to and tucked above the passenger frame rail, and the entire exit pipe of this system will be refabricated in 304 stainless. If anyone wants the Magnaflow ceramic coated tail pipe section presently on the truck send me a PM.

after a long trip and a couple months of the exhaust I really don't like how loud it is. I can say that I see a performance boost for sure.

Just went to a muffler shop and the guy said there is no space for a resonator, and also that it may not do anything for the sound.(i do understand that not all shops are created equally).

I curious on how you do yours and if it will help quiet it down at all. it is pretty tight in between the frame rail and the body. Is that where you are planning to put the resonator?

Yep. Heard the same thing from an exhaust shop. Recently I put on a dual swingout and removed the spare along with the lowering mechanism and braces. The Vibrant ultra quiet resonator gets outstanding reviews, is 13” long and will be stuffed up between the frame rails. Tail pipe to exit straight out the rear. Can get a rough idea of how much space is freed up in the following pic. As long as the muffler sits above the present tail pipe exit it’s a win in terms of clearance.

dang straight out the back. I've been doing some research and will probably put it right after the second cat and before the muffler. it's a tight fit though

Mine finally showed up. Went to get it installed in a garage to find out my 99 Runner has done quite the job of rusting the bolts. No amount of PB-Blaster was going to help.





Have the single cat Federal model. The bolts attaching the hanger bracket were thoroughly rusted. They actually looked welded on. 6 sided socket immediately rounded the corners.


Got a nut extractor kit off amazon. Downsized to 13? mm extractor hammered it on and off it came!

The bracket was toast. The threads on the welded nuts on the bracket were so rusted they looked like a spring after the bolt was removed. Installed M10 1.25 stainless bolt and nuts until the new bracket shows up from McGeorge.

Had to cut out some pieces via sawzall and use the nut extractors on the O2 sensor nuts as well. So to Home Despot for blades :ybrick:

Whoops, need a gasket for the O2 sensor. Go to O'Reilly. :ybrick:

Learned some PB-Blaster on the rubber mounts made it much easier to remove and install.

Used the OEM hitch nut and bolt on the tip hanger. Loosening the next bolt towards the rear of the vehicle, spray with PB-Blaster and give a good scrubbing the the bolt went in pretty easy. Glad I had an impact gun with a long extension to get those loose.

So... 1 wasted trip to use the garage, 1 trip to HD and 1 trip to O'Reilly and some elbow grease and cussing and it's on.

The sound is - different - than my leaky exhaust which was a bit loud and clunker sounding. With the resonator it is louder than expected on acceleration up to about 55 mph in 4th. Then the sound lessens. Feel its tuned to cruise in 5th between 65 and 75 for the least amount of drone.

After driving mine around the City for a few days, I'm happy with the sound. I am running it in the "Most Aggressive Sound"* configuration (per MF - cap on the muffler outlet) and it sounds similar in decibels, but somehow more refined, than the MF straight-through style muffler and stock pipe I pulled off. I am doing a 9 hour road trip with wife and 2 grown kids next week and will definitely put on the full 180 tube and resonator. That will be fun driving from SF to Mojave Desert with a full passenger list -LOL, but I will get to do some offroading while they do a resort thing. Bless them for letting me take this rig, because let's face it, they aren't the most comfortable to ride in for hours unless you are the pilot.

*Most Aggressive would really be an open 2nd outlet with a short turn-down - LOL. I am going to see how obnoxious that sounds for Ss & Gs. What I like about this clamp-on system is being able to try different things. Generally you are stuck with what ever you or the muffler shop welds on.

I called MF to discuss solutions, their recommendation was to add an additional resonator between the cat and muffler. Either p/n 12866 or, if it will fit p/n 14158. The latter is 6" round so it may not clear.

I noticed that the resonator coming off the muffler is empty, ie. not packed, so I was wondering if packing it with stainless steel wool would help cut down on noise. They relayed that this would not have any benefit.

I've had mine in for a while now and will say it has quieted down since initial install. I'm actually surprised people are saying it's too loud... although sound and audio levels are a function of each individual I guess.

Still loving mine, and I do not think it's too loud. Louder than my old TRD exhuast on my previous 3rd gen 4Runner, but quieter than my 4th gen with a stock exhaust and Magnaflow 21" muffler.

Mine has settled a bit in the last two weeks and I rather like the sound now! There's still that weird hollow metal tube noise from the crossmember bend section, but it usually goes away once the system warms up.

I'm setting off car alarms driving thru the neighborhood. So it's loud enough. I'm not geared so 70 mph on the freeway i'm at 2100 RPM which is just outside of the sweet spot on these for the hemholts guy to work.

I talked to Connor with Magnaflow, the engineer behind this. He's a 3rd gen guy! We basically chalked it up to having headers on and aftermarket cats to the reason why it so loud. He did say a resonator will help with the sound. Hopefully will get it on this weekend.

I put the Heimholz (sp?) resonator back on for a 1000 mile road trip last week to the Mojave desert and the whole sound profile has mellowed a lot since returning. I can't see how it would be 'too loud' for some, but then I have stock exhaust manifold and 2 Cats. I put it on to appease the family but will be unbolting the reso and J-tube and capping the outlet I don't notice that much of a volume increase and never set off alarms here in a city environment. Like another forum member said here "I drive it like a go-cart' and i like the extra 1 HP.

I did put on the Vibrant ultra quiet resonator in between the last cat and the muffler. It defiantly quieted it down a bit. I'll use the reference the muffler guy used in which i agree. If the exhaust is an 8 (which means 8 out of 10 on the scale of loudness...) it will take it from an 8 to a 6. So it brings it down a couple notches. It has made driving it long distances much more... tolerable.. i guess. just got back from a trip from SoCal to Moab UT. 13 hours of highway driving plus wheeling in Sedona and in Moab. After a few hours of the slight drone that I have my ears take notice. I do really love the sound and the Resonator really cleaned it up. I imagine this is how it sounds with stock headers ext.

Exit was also modified to turn down above frame rail just behind rear wheel. Cut at the NW swingout rear bumper bracket. Pics below.
