I know when the MAINT light comes on, you need a oil change.

But, my question is, and what mileage does it come on? And when it does, how do I reset it? I need a oil change (only like 200-300 miles over, doing it tomorrow or Wednesday.

:thanks:

I don't want to be THAT guy but resetting maintenance light has been explained on here a bunch. If I remember right you put it to the odometer (the total miles...) then hold the reset button while you turn the key to the on position...and it will flash then go solid than go away. That is just from memory but a quick search for you will find it for sure.

My 03 Limited doesn't have a "maintenance" light, only check engine. Are you sure its a maintenances light?

Would have searched but can't, on my phone and computer is getting a new hard drive.

Oh really...must be another diffference btw American and Canadian 4runners.

Maybe, but your bulb could be burnt out. Grab a flashlight (or get the sun on the gauges) and look around for it.

Mine is in the tach section of the gauges, but the Canadian 4Runners might not have it. Not sure tho.

it is in the owners manual on how to reset it. also it depends to what it is programmed for. mine comes on every 5,000 miles but from what i have herd they can program it to 5,000, 7,000, or 10000

Don't have a owners manual, ordering one tomorrow.

Hopefully it's set to 5,000, because I put synthetic in mine and always do it at 5,000.

Thanks to everyone for the info!

i do believe factory is 5,000 so you should be alright, just check your oil and see if it is dirty or not. if it is black change it asap.

here is the link to reset the light. i would say write down mileage you reset it at then when it comes back on and that will tell you.

The factory light will be set at whatever the manufacturers recommended interval is for changing the oil. In your case 5k.

Glad to see your changing even synthetic at 5k. I've heard too many horror stories about running it too long and ruining engines. I change mine at 5k as well.

Color isn't an effective indicator. Oil will quickly get dark from the combustion cycle. What matters is the oils retention of its characteristics. Does it retain spec'ed viscosity and are the all important additives still present. Heat does, over time, reduce both viscosity and additives, but neither can be determined by color of the oil.

This is why we have the general "3k" for conventional and 5k or greater for Synthetic. The reality is, even conventional oil is light years ahead of where it was 30 years ago and can usually go for longer; but as it is very hard to determine the shape of oil without a complex chemical analysis (done in a lab)... we stick with these figures.

I talked to a Toyota tech while getting a filter my last oil change; and he told me new Toyota's that run synthetic have a 10k oil change interval. New BMW's are at 15k. Synthetic oil simply does not break down. Even though my maint light comes on at 5k, I have moved to a 7500k change cycle. The toyota tech told me this is what toyota quietly recommends on most modern but older Toyotas. Not talking a 96, talking a vehicle built within the past 10 years.

Anyway. Not really to counter anything said. Since it is impractical to have your oil chemically tested before every oil change; 3k for Conventional is still a pretty good point. That said, even conventional oil in a correctly operating engine, should honestly last 4k or more. Where that line stops, is obviously determined by the quality of the oil.

I agree, you cannot assess oil by its color. Oil's primary job is not to clean, so waiting until its dirty is bad advice. Oil lubricates and can lose its lubrication properties long before it turns dark.

Synthetics do breakdown, they are just less prone to breakdown. Can you run them longer? Maybe. Will I? No.

I've seen one of those 15k oil change BMW's need its engine rebuilt because of the oil, before 60k miles. All maintenance done at dealer, with synthetic fluids, at the right interval. A fluke? Possibly, but I know mechanical engineers and my own personal mechanic who advise against it. I don't pay my mechanic for oil changes either, do them myself so he isn't gaining anything from me.

Anyways, everyone will have their own opinion on this. And this is just my $.02. Although I've been known to run synthetic to 6k, I only do so when I don't have the time right away to change it, and it does push my comfort zone.

As you said, the only way to know is to have it tested, and I'd rather just change it.

People with these long oil change intervals...

Are they trying to get the most out of the oil...or the most out of the engine??

Personally I try to get the MOST out of the engine. I wouldn't go over 5k intervals.

x2

An oil change is cheaper than a rebuild or a new engine!

good point never thought about it like that ive just always been told if its isnt dirty looking then you dont have much to worry about. but im no expert or done any research. so sorry for the wrong info and thank you for the correction DC

Toyota actually states 7500k intervals on dino oil with he 90915-2004 Japanese filter. i got 10k on M1 synthetic without issue. BITOG has stated numerous times that the V8 is one of the easiest engines on oil they have ever seen.
