Just purchased a 2006 4runner sport edition V8. Mileage is 84k. Is there any maintenance issues that should be checked out beside oil changes and timing belt @90k?

At 85k, pretty much do the standard 5000 mile oil change and filter. However, with a high mileage classification, full synthetic may be a good option. Its more expensive, but worth it in the long run. Ive used Valvoline, Penzoil, Royal Purple, and they all are great, but expen$sive. However, the supertech (generic-ish) full syn is only 17$ at walmart, and Ive had no trouble. If you want to spend a few more bucks, go for the better filter, instead of the oil.

Next, dont even worry about the timing belt. The dealer would charge you close to 100, if not more for a simple 5 minute belt and the belt is only 15$ to them. I work in an auto shop, and the belt on the 4Runner is relatively easy. Pure profit for dealers/auto shops. Just check for cracks, and fraying, then consider it.

Finally, inspect all the following (just my experience): coolant level, and pH (simple test strips at walmart. should be a pH of around 7.5-8)
rear diff fluid.
air filter
transmission level (with car running, in park and e-brake on)
spark plug (just pull one to check)

Once you hit 90k, consider buying a gallon of toyota long life concentrate and doing a radiator drain and fill (not a whole system flush). If you need instructions, I can easily pm you, its a very simple job and alot cheaper. Also look into a new air filter and cabin filter.
