Maintenance after 120k

Hey guys,

I recently picked up an '07 4runner sport w/ 130k miles.
The dealer did the oil change but I am not sure of any other maintenance done.

The scheduled maintenance book that came with stops at 120k so I'm not sure what the recommended maintenance items are.

Any suggestions besides the obvious oil change/ plugs at 30k/ cabin & engine filter?

Also, do you guys suggest the stock Denso Spark Plugs #K20HR-U11 or some iridiums that last longer? Like the NGK iridiums in my civic which last 100k miles...

Make sure the timing belt has been done. There should be a sticker of when it was replaced under the hood. Also might want to look into getting a tune up and all other fluids changed. That way you know what has been done and can start fresh. Might want to look into the camber/caster bolts on the lower control arms to make sure they are not seized up. Grease up all the U-joints and also the slip yokes so you don't get the clunk.

I was under the impression that the 07 has a timing chain?

Ah yes thanks! I did take a look at the fluids and they seem pretty clear. I couldn't check the transmission fluid tho...

Also, what is a slip yoke?

Do yourself a favor and register with your VIN @ Toyota Owner's site below:

Its free and will give you any maintenance history ever performed by a dealer or registered owner. Also, the timing belt only applies to V8's. Doing a front/transfer case/rear diff fluid swap isn't a bad idea, along with spark plugs and power steering & brake fluid. At 130k, most owners trade their vehicles in so a lot of long term routine mx items like the ones listed above get overlooked. Might also be a good idea to take a look at the CV joints to check for leaks and make sure 4LO engages properly, very often a non-player among relatively high mile used vehicles.

Yeaa I saw that and registered recently. However, I didn't see too much service history for my vehicle. Hmm better start youtubing the front/rear diff. Fluid swap...

Btw, I don't have 4wd so I guess it makes life a little easier

Well, if you plan to ride your tr4 for long and if you're not sure of what has been done to the car before, taking the mileage into account, it's a good idea to change all the fluids, it's way cheaper than repairs/ deteriotation. Don't judge by their colors - if they are dark, it means you are way behind the schedule or that somethin's wrong. First time coolant should've been replaced at 100K or in 5 years (should be changed every 50K or 3 years afterwards, SLLC is your choice, it's pink in color as opposed to the older Toyota coolant LLC, which is red). Consider cleaning the throttle plate, MAF sensor. Go with iridium spark plugs, you can buy Denso or Denso in Toyota packing, engine runs smoother on them than on regular. Chevron Techron or similar fuel additive will help cleaning the fuel system, may decrease the ticking noise. Lubricate chassis (I guess this would address your question about slide yokes). Clean or replace your PCV valve (DIY). You may also consider changing (or testing) your radiator cap just to make sure it works if engine gets too hot and needs to boil off excessive pressure to prevent overheating. Serpentine belt should've been replaced at this mileage as well. And regular stuff such as your break pads, air filter, cabin filter. Also, google or search here on this site for 100K and 125K service - it will have detailed info on what needs to be inspected.

Last I read less then 30% of people who buy cars ever get them serviced at the dealer. That leaves 70% either do it themselves (like myself and many people in this forum)..or they take it to an independent garage. So just because there are no "DEALER" service records doesn't mean it's never been serviced.

True, but it doesn't mean it has been serviced either. I hope it's not the case for the original poster. Besides, this is Toyota, it often forgives lack of attention.

Yes, looks the fluids are the right color and all that. The car also was inspected by a good third party mechanic before purchase so I'm not too worried. I just need to take the spark plugs out and see if they should be replaced. I'll probably get iridiums just because I know they last longer. The engine is not overheating currently but if so I'll check the radiator cap.

Exactly. On my civic, I did the oil change myself for 7 years as well as all the other basic maintenance. None of that is going to show up on any service record.

Yes! I'm just overly cautious haha.
