Manual Hubs

Hey i was just wondering if all 2nd gens were auto locking hubs. I can't seem to find any that aren't. Tried googling too. So then my next questions is will 1st gen locking hubs fit. (I figure they should but i'd rather not pay to find out the dont haha) Also ASIN or WARN? i could get WARN but they're $250. I've heard people on here say that ASIN was good too though I dont have a price for those from my parts store.(could look i guess but im lazy, i'd rather pull some used ones and clean them up. cheaper that way anyways.) Aisins are stronger and you should be able to find em off a parting out truck on Craigs no problem. Mine are off a 90 truck mounted on IFS hubs and a 85 Toyota solid axle, and a whole brake system from a 96 Tacoma! With some research you'll find a ton of parts interchange with the proper know how! Have fun :)
 
i picked up some mile marker hubs from summit and ive beat the piss out of em still no probs installs like 45 mins per side if u pack bearing with em
 
before you start buying the hubs tho, I would call the actual company (aisin, warn, mile marker-which i have) and make sure the number of splines and bolts and everything fits ok. I think i went to pull a part one time, got aisin hubs off a solid axle, tried to put them on, and the bolts didn't line up on my ifs. I dunno if it's because it was aftermarket or anything, but it didn't work. And i went to east cleveland to get them (SKETCHHHHHHH) haha

i think the ifs hubs are 26 spline the solid axle are 30 spline, so they are diff from ifs vs solid axle. even the red dial that you turn to lock and unlock the hubs are different the ifs are flush flat and the solid axle dial protrudes out a little, also the ifs hubs are easier to find , than the ones from a solid axle

well from what i've looked up as long as it's IFS and has manual hubs on the 1/2 gen it'll work. Though 3rd is different. Just have to go to the yard and pull it.

There are several advantages that are able to be experienced when a person uses manual hubs as opposed to automatic hubs. One of these is the fact that you can do the wheels that you want or do them all, your choice In cold weather, automatic hubs tend to freeze up and are not reliable when they are needed.

The other type can be locked manually and as a result this will lead to a person being able to lock them by themselves, this as a result ensures that this can be done effectively and without any real trouble.

The weather that a person will be driving, will greatly affect the decision as to if they are going to use their hubs or not. If you are looking to head out for a weekend of off road driving, then you are able to lock the hubs down and hit the trails with your truck. This cannot be done in a vehicle that is not equipped. There can be hours of adventure that is open to a person if they know what they are doing.

These hubs tend to break a lot less than their automatic counterparts; this in the end will save you a lot of time and money in repairs. The reason for this is due to the fact that often times automatic hubs are left on by accident and as a result are used a lot more than the others. This saves a person a lot in the way of repair cost.

If you have never used these, then you should make the effort to do so and as a result allow them the chance to prove them to you as a result. These can many times be an important aspect in making a decision as to if the use of automatic or manual is best for them.

There is less chance of manual hubs breaking and as a result needing to be replaced, the main reason is that you are able to put a lot less wear and tear on these when you are driving around as opposed to automatic hubs that tend to suffer more damage over long term use.

Yes, the spline count is different on solid axle, that's why I said 86-89 in my reply above.

Less wear and tear on the front end components, as the hubs disconnect the wheels from the axle shafts, so nothing inside the axle housing turns.
Also leads to less drag, so that should make a slight improvement in mpg.

But doesn't the passenger side axle still spin? With ADD I believe it's the left/driver side axle that gets engaged when switched in to 4WD, when disengaged it slides back off, roughly speaking anyway.

The advantage to having automatic hubs would be that you needn't get out in bad weather to lock them.

Not with hubs (manual or auto), you're totally disconnected from driver and pass side axle shafts.

Yes with ADD. With ADD there are no "hubs", the wheels are permanently connected to the shafts via drive flanges.

im sure this is a stupid question but what is "ADD"? How can i tell if i have it? How's it work? My hubs as they stand have a golden cap that pops off and then a nut the runs into the end of the half-shaft. Thanks for the help.
 
It seems that the "automatic hubs" that are under discussion were only installed in '86-'89 and were a failure for Toyota. I am in the process of taking apart my hubs and replacing the old grease with new. I read through the pertinent material in the owner's manual to set my mind straight. If you don't have one and you own a 4runner, you ought to obtain one. Here's a link to a full explanation of the topic. I went into the stealership today and asked a salesman if Toyota still used the ADD system. He knew nothing about it, but from this article I assume they do. This internet article isn't fully clear to me, however. First of all, if only the driver's side shaft is connected when one shifts into 4 Wheel does that mean that the passenger side is always in drive? Otherwise, you only have a three wheel drive vehicle.

ADD is Toyota's Automatic Differential Disconnect system that replaced locking hubs in 88/89. Your description is of the cover on a drive flange used with the ADD system. Another clue is if there is an assembly mounted on the front axle right beside the diff, with a couple of vacuum lines and a few wires. That's the ADD actuator. A little Searching will get you plenty more info.
