Manual shifting question

When shifting manually, is it possible to over rev the engine or will the tranny shift automatically to prevent engine damage?

I was trying out the sequential transmission and kind of got scared because
The engine would just rev up more and more so I shifted on my own..

I suspect there's a rev limiter or something to prevent that. I know I tried to downshift from 2nd to 1st once and it just beeped at me and wouldn't shift because I was probably going too fast at the time for 1st gear.

It limits you and won't let you switch. It gives you a nice beep to let you know it doesn't want to listen anymore. I drive in to the mountains on I-70 pretty often and even the road to my house is more of a climb so I use the manual to make it easier. I wondered the same thing and just tried it to find out.

Yes....it WILL shift to the next gear as you accelerate. It will NOT let you shift to a lower gear if it knows the rpms will be too high. HAL knows best!

I think I formulated my question wrong...

Let's say you want to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, can you red line the engine or will the electronics prevent that and shift from 2nd to 3rd automatically.

I think Westwind answered your question; "Yes....it WILL shift to the next gear as you accelerate."

I am taking that to mean, even in manual mode, the brain will shift for you if you rev too high for too long.

My Infiniti will ride along at redline 7800rpm until you shift it up or let off the gas. It will auto downshift if you get to slow for a gear though. So the T4r will auto both ways for sure?

There are a few threads on all this already....but this is not a true stick, obviously. The sport mode essentially limits your top gear and will not down shift if you "get too slow" if you have it in 4th it will stay there, unless you hammer it to the floor then it will downshift to whatever gear it wants to give more power, the as you let off it will go back to 4th.

I am always amazed at just how slow you have to be going to get it to drop to 1st without getting the rejection beep.

If your in manual shifting (meaning you pulled the shifter towards you and down shifted into first manually) then when you start off and mash the accelerator the truck will not shift on its own, you need to put it into second gear or you'll hear the engine sputtering and the tac needle bouncing. If you put it into manual shift but don't touch it after then it shifts on its own at a higher RPM then if it was in regular automatic (shifter pushed to the right)

Yes there is a safety function per se, it won't go boom. Sounds like crap and it sputters and the tac bounces but it will not shift for you.
