If your 4Runner has ABS, your speedo works off that. I wouldn't say "the front sensors", because your speedo will still work without the front sensors. Mine did.
You can install a VSS from a Tacoma or non-ABS 4Runner.
That's what I did, because I don't have ABS.
You have a +12v, a ground, and a signal wire.
If you're not doing anything with your ABS- and your speedo worked before- your speedo will work just fine.
It may be worth mentioning- my speedo was off a few MPH, and swapping to the VSS made my speedo 100% dead accurate with my 315/70R17 tires [emoji1598]

just to clarify; I could run a 1999 v6 5speed 2wd ecu? I was honestly thinking about it considering my transfer case is "manual" and shouldn't need to send any signal to the ecu

Just finished my 5 speed swap on my 96 4runner. There is one pin that goes into the ECU for 4wd. Not sure what it does. Heard it might change fuel trims. But I have seen other people do 4wd swap and not wire in a single 4wd pin without consequence. You can run a 4x2 ecu. Thats the only difference between 4x4 and 4x2 manual ECU.

Just finished my 5 speed swap on my 96 4runner. There is one pin that goes into the ECU for 4wd. Not sure what it does. Heard it might change fuel trims. I completely cut out my rear abs. Speedo still works. Although my front ones are still there
