Manual vs Automatic POLL

Which would you rather have: Manual or Auto transmission?

I think most of us would prefer the 5 speed but they were only avaialble for 4 years and not at all in the Limited trims so I'd be guessing 5 speeds will easily be top in this poll.

this poll it not about what years came with autos or manuals, but wether you would choose an auto or manual, its almost if you could get a free swap of your tranny, what would you chose... AUTO or MANUAL....


i went for the auto
 
all of my cars are manual, but i wanted the 4runner in auto .... there are times when i wish it had a manual trans, but overall i'm happier w/ the auto tranny in it for what i needed it for. I would also add that Toyota needs to get off this automatic everything kick and at least offer the manual trans for those that want it! IS-F in automatic only Blech
 
my last car was a 5spd integra...full exhaust, aggressive eibach suspension. My Auto Limited is a luxurious change.
 
Rare or not, personally, I don't get all the hype w/ having a manual off road. I guess I'm just spoiled with having an auto. Don't get me wrong, I'll take a manual in a car any day, but in an SUV, give me an auto.

I picked auto, but it really depends on what body style 4Runner. In my third gen I would want an auto, but if I was to buy a first gen I would want a stick. My CRX and Datsun 510 are both sticks because they would be stupid and pointless as autos lol :biggrin2:
 
I would have to go with the automatic because when I go to St. Louis, there is nothing worse than having a manual in my opinion.

Manual for me. I feel lucky having a manual 4runner because they seem so rare. But I used to live in LA and I would hate to be stuck in traffic with a stick shift :p
 
Manual for me, for these reasons:

-Greater control
-More fun, (not for speed)
-Manual tranny is mechanically simple compared to an auto, (higher likelihood of failure/greater expense to repair)

But driving in heavy traffic does suck.



Poll is even at time of post...cool.

I'll play devil's advocate here...so don't take offense to these comments. :D


-Elaborate how you have greater control over a manual vs. an auto?

-Also, how is a manual in a heavy SUV w/ barely 183 stock horsepower considered "fun"? If not for speed, then what?

-As far as an auto tranny having a greater chance to fail and thus costing more to have repaired...well, auto trannies have come along in the last 20yrs. Once was the day when manual's set the bar for reliability, but auto's of now are very reliable if properly maintained.
I cannot speak towards the cost factor to having either one repaired, but as far as reliablity is concerned, the two are very close to being equal, if not completely equal, by today's standards.

-What do you mean driving a manual in heavy traffic sucks...I thought the purists loved a manual no matter what the circumstances? :D I'm kidding, manual's do suck in bumper to bumper traffic. I can't fault you for that one.

lol - no offense taken...

I thought I might get sh*t...so here is my reasoning behind my reasons:

-Greater control: not only do I have an extra gear, (more options), but I have a clutch, which as I'm sure you know, gives one 100% control over engagement of the engine to the drivetrain; whereas in an auto you're either full or none

-More fun: this mostly applies to a loose traction situation where I feel like I can create fishtail under greater control, and over a higher range of speed

-Reliability/cost of repair: you're right, auto trannies have come a long way, and they're more reliable in a RWD setup, BUT, I have never had 160k on an auto without slipping or a rebuild and I have had 3 manual vehs, (the T4R, a BMW 323i euro, and an Audi 200), go more than that on the original clutch, not to even mention rebuilds. Plus I have rebuilt manual trannies before, but I don't think I would ever attempt getting dirty with the planetary gearsets and valve bodies you would find in an auto.

These points are probably based, at least in part, on my experience, but that's what feeds opinions, right?

And after all that hot air, 5 speeds still SUCK in traffic.

P.S. - I DO like the idea of CVT, though...wish it was offered with more cars:D
