My first car that I actually owned (that wasn't my parents) was a 1994 SR5 I purchased in 2005 when I was 21. I LOVED that car. It had the 3.Slow and saggy rear springs, but it was a sweet dark blue color, leather interior with a sunroof, and a pretty good sound system. Unfortunately the engine went bad, and rather than pay for an engine rebuild I sold it in 2008.

I went through two sporty cars next. First was a 1999 Toyota Celica GT Convertible, cherry red, black leather, manual, with an 8 speaker sound system.

After I tired of fixing that convertible top, I sold the Celica in 2010 and got a 2002 Lexus IS300 sedan. It was pearl white, sunroof, with a two-tone interior black on beige. Fast and sexy, I loved that car. I even drove it to Alaska and back for my summer job. The only drawback was getting stuck in the snow, A LOT; stupid Utah winters.

Pic of the IS300 for fun.

Check out my garage for pics of the other cars if you want. :)

So this last Feb I started looking for another 4Runner. I narrowed it down to the '99-'02 range for a number of reasons. I wanted something with around 150k miles or less and most importantly good cup holders (my how I hated my 2nd gen cupholders). I drove a few trucks before I found mine, but when I saw the color I had to have it. Dat Thundercloud Grey.

The truck is a 2001 SR5 with 125k miles when I bought it. It's not in perfect shape but overall it's solid. There's one dent in the tailgate and a few small paint chips. The seats are a little worn, but not too bad. Not a lot of frame rust, although the rear axle needs some TLC.

I don't have any pics of the door actuator replacement, nor the speaker install. Suffice it to say getting the lock mechanism out of the door was a PITA. Speakers were fairly easy, just re-using the stock wiring for now.

EDIT: I'll keep most of this antenna info here, because it may give someone an idea later. I've replaced this antenna with a better one that I fit through the firewall into the cab.

:Original Post:

We're heading down to Moab this weekend for a little camping, hiking, wheeling, so I decided I needed to get my HAM antenna installed. I grabbed all the parts from a local shop in Salt Lake City, Communication Products check him out if you're in the area and need gear.

I started out my project by trying to locate a good spot to run the huge a** antenna connector through the firewall into the cab. I couldn't see an easy way to do it, so to T4R.org I went.

I decided to try out 4x4runner2002's suggestion of using the grommet below the pax carpet, as I didn't feel comfortable trying to push the antenna connector through the grommet with the main wire harness.

The lip mount is on the hood on the driver's side. I like the antenna up front where I can see it, so I won't break it off on something. :) I know it may have more interference up here and if it's too bad I may move it to the tailgate at a later date.

I loosely ziptied the wire to the rear heater lines to keep it away from the exhaust. I'm concerned about getting interference from having the wire so close to the metal lines, but this was the only way I could see to keep the wire away from the cat.

I ran the wire from the grommet under the carpet, into the center console, and out next to the driver seat. (sorry for the blurrycam pics, cellphone camera's not so great sometimes).

I filled the hole I cut in the floor grommet with waterproof caulking to keep out dust and water.

I was actually killing several projects at once here. I needed to finish swapping my dash lights from that nasty green to white LED's. I hadn't ordered enough LED's to finish the first time. While I had the console apart I noticed something interesting on the power wires for the aux power ports.

IMG_20130411_174655_zps59886472.jpg~original

I was trying to plug them back in when one of those wires sparked against the metal part of the dash. Yay new fuse (note to self, remember to disconnect battery). I started to cap them, when I took a closer look. That yellow tape didn't give me warm fuzzy feelings, so I checked out what was under it.

If I ever find the previous owner, he's getting a kick in the junk. Wonder what he was powering?
They stripped the insulation from the power wires, parted the copper strands in the middle, ran this new wire through the new hole in the copper, then twisted it and wrapped with yellow tape.

All fixed. NO FIRES as CoB would say.

Next fix. This part on the rear window wiper looked like it has sat in a vat of salt water for a week. Ick.

Old vs. New

You've got a good looking 4runner. I understand the student budget build, I've got two students in college and two more in elementary school so I'm on that budget build myself. Take alot of pics at Moab and have fun.

Around Green River, Moab, Monticello Utah

Took the Runner to southeastern Utah for the first time today. We didn't do anything terribly difficult or technical, mostly just going out to camp and explore. Crew was my dad, 5 of my younger siblings, and me. 2 vehicles, my '01 and my dad's '95 SR5.

I don't have a good camera atm, took all these with my Google Nexus 4 smartphone.

Getting ready to leave.

Left Friday afternoon, mostly a travel and get lost day. We went several miles down the wrong trail, but found a decent open area to camp that night. Making breakfast the next morning.

Found a little mud puddle. Mostly water, still managed to get all dirty. :)

Here's a video of my 13 year old brother driving my dad's runner around/through that mud. I learned to drive 15 years ago in that same car on the back trails of Utah.

For lunch we drove to the ghost town of Sego, UT. There was an old coal mining operation in this canyon, but when the railroad converted to electric the mine went under. There was a rail spur up this canyon to the town and you could still see the old rail bed. Most of the buildings are gone, all that's left are some dugout homes, the company store, and the collapsed remains of the boarding house.

Cont.

The next day was more exploring, mostly looking for Anasazi (Ancient Pueblo) ruins. We only saw a couple, and I didn't get any good pictures of the cliff dwellings we saw from the road.

This is a reconstructed Kiva, with a pueblo built around it. Very unusual, as Kiva's were usually dug below ground and solitary.

Matt Warner was an outlaw that occasionally operated with Butch Cassidy. He was one of the outlaws to make use of the Robber's Roost area of the San Rafael Swell in Utah. He eventually became a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Marshall of Price, UT after serving 3 years in the Utah State Prison. He left this inscription on the canyon wall in 1920.

The only pic of actually being in Moab. That poor green 2nd Gen next to me was really beat up. :(

I have now re-discovered something I had forgotten. Once that red Utah dirt gets in your truck it will never be completely gone again.

Thanks!

I just discovered my first real issue with the runner today tho. I noticed a big puddle under my truck today. Looks like the front output seal on the transfer case is leaking. Total bummer. Checked the fluid level and it's still got most of the fluid, so at least I can go a few days before getting it fixed. It's too big of a job for me to tackle, plus I've got finals and job stuff going on this week and next. /sigh

Rust :(

So I crawled under my 4Runner today for the first time since the summer and I found that my rear axle looks a whole lot worse than I remember it being. :( Think this is salvageable or should I start looking for a new axle?

There's no leaks yet, fortunately.

I see no reason to replace the entire axle unless you find one with an e-locker like you had said you were looking at. Just get under there with a wire wheel and go to town to get all the rust and old paint off, then hit it with a few coats from the rattle can

New Chirping Sound

I've found another problem. The drivetrain is making this chirping sound while under power. The sound isn't changing with engine speed, just wheel speed, although it is significantly louder when under power vs coasting. I'm hoping it's just needing to be lubed, but any other ideas would be helpful. Here's a video I took while circling the parking lot at work this morning.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus from people I've talked with about it. The paint peeling like that kind of freaked me out there for a while.

Might just need to grease the fittings in your U-Joints on the drive shaft.

+1 for the wire wheel, it's not going to rust through the axle. Just take the brake line/parking brake cable and stuff and clean that sucker up real good with the wire wheel as much as you can and then cover it with paint. Good to go.

I had them greased and it did help it a bit. The chittering is still coming and going though. I had a mechanic look at it and he said he couldn't see which joint may be seizing up. Usually a seized joint will start producing a rusty colored powder and he couldn't see that anywhere. If it doesn't clear up in a couple of weeks I'll have to drop the shaft to see which joint it is.

Fortunately the rest of my frame looks pretty dang good. Just that rear 1/4 from the rear axle back looks like that. My dad wants me to clean up the rust on his 2nd gen once I'm done experimenting on mine.

Highland, pretty close to the SR-92/Alpine Highway intersection. It's nice to see so many UT people on here. :)

Rubbing

Got my Duratracs on finally and I LOVE them. Makes the truck look so much better; I actually feel like I'm driving a capable vehicle now. Not that it wasn't before, but you know what I mean.

I am having a slight rubbing problem with the front mudflaps though. The tires are rubbing on this piece while turning. I'm not sure how to fix it other than taking the flaps off or getting a lift faster than I expected. I'm planning on getting an 880/906 lift as soon as more money comes in.

Running the antenna wire from the driver side to the pax side. I ziptied it to the frame for now.

In the lower pic, (this might be a dumb question what are those 2 metal lines up against the fire wall or w.e its called on the passenger side. there 2 silver metal lines and then go into rubber hoses.
I'm asking because my 99 4runner limited literally doesn't have them connected to anything. they just stop, there not even plugged . this is how i bought it and I've yet to figure out what they run to
