MattJakobs Build Thread-2001 Stellar Blue Pearl

Definitely necessary. I thought I could get by with bashing it, but I ended up going out and buying one. I'd be more than happy to lend it to you. I know you're in VB as well, and wouldn't mind coming over to lend a hand.

Mine is running however, I have a been fighting the knock sensor codes (P0325and P0330). I have a thread here....

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/197664-p0325-p0330-diagnosis.html

If you know someone, that would be AWESOME. I'm at the end of my rope a bit...

Help would be greatly appreciated as I've never done them before and a second set of hands would be nice. I'm usually off every Monday and Wednesday. I really need to pick up some extra bolts though. Beers on me

I'll PM you Marks number, he's the one who actually did the swap and he's done a few other things on it and our 99 as well. I met him through another forum member, Sterbenlicht, you may have seen some of his posts earlier in my build. In Marks garage, hes got a full sized lift with just about every other thing you could ever want/need.

I purchased my tacoma for $500 from a customer at my work. I found a used & complete 69k mile 3.4L out of a wrecked 03 tacoma prerunner off of eBay of all places. Had it shipped to me here in Md. from Az. I also replaced all the maintance items and clutch before i installed it. Its been a great engine, i was nervous since it was a sight unseen used engine. I drove the truck to Texas to pick up my new 17ft camper just days after i got it up and running. I've been upgrading it ever since, Toytec lift, tundra brakes, SCS wheels, poly bushings ect... My buddies all have new trucks and call me "cheap" because my taco and my 2 4runners are 10+ years old. I tell them keep making those payments, lol.

Wow. PO was an ass with maintenance.

Yeah, absolutely. It was a little odd though because the Carfax showed it was dealer maintained for the first 8ish years until being sold to the second owner who didn't have any vehicle reports for 4ish years. We assumed that the owner had just self maintained it. For the 2ish years after the second owner, it was dealer maintained again and right before we bought it, the valve covers were done. My guess is the dealer saw how sludgy it was and told them to sell it quick (this is where I come in). The only good thing is that we got a good price and I was able to meet some very knowledgeable people to help me out on the way.
The JDM had is original plugs and wires still in it and they were in decent shape as well. The gentleman who preformed the swap said he though the engine might have somewhere between 30,000-40,000 miles on it.

Beer is always a good motivator for me. Haha. Seriously though, the right tools made all the difference. Once they were out, it was cake. Just let me know when all your tuff comes in and we can work out a time.

Appreciate that. Sounds like he is the right man for the job. That's why I love this forum......fellow enthusiasts helping each other out.

I agree the right tools and a lift makes life a lot easier when it comes to auto repair.

I love those SCS wheels as I've seen them locally on a 3rd gen. I don't think pictures truly do them justice, the simplicity of them is everything.
I had to read the Ebay line twice just to make sure I wasn't seeing anything haha but hey, if it's working, ya can't complain. I plan on taking mine down to the Outer Banks in the upcoming weeks so hopefully she's up for the test. It's not nearly the drive to Texas so we should be good. I was doing mostly cheap, inexpensive mods until this so now let the fun (expensive) stuff start happening.

Hopefully can do it by July but we'll see about that. I only buy the good stuff so I hope you don't like cheap beer. He's done work on me and my brother's 4Runners as well as my Uncles '10 Taco.

Bad luck I guess. I just got a JDM engine for my second 4Runner. My mechanic said this thing looks like it has 20k at best on it. It is definitely the cleanest 5VZ I've seen in a long time.

I was thrilled to see how clean this was and all the little Japanese lettering written on it. Have you put yours in yet? What was wrong with yours?

Just got running an hour ago. It sounds great. I bought the entire truck with a blown head gasket for the price of the brand new tires on it.

Here's a pic of the engine when it was delivered

When i was searching for a 3.4 for my project tacoma i read somewhere that the JDM engines were slightly different than the 3.4's that are built for the USA. For instance i remember seeing a pic of a JDM 3.4 and the oil filter set farther back, where the oil cooler should be. Any other differences? I also read that the emmission parts from the old engine could easily be transfered to the JDM, is this true?

Correct. We had to change the manifolds, relocate the oil filter, swap out the water pump(Hiace 5VZ is missing a coolant neck), and the injector harness. The fan pulley bracket is totally different too. There are a bunch of details here and there.

Where'd you pick it up from? The JDM Dealer in Baltimore was my second choice if the one in Manassas didn't have any in.

I have yet to look at it in depth with work but my next day off (Wednesday), I'll try and park this next to the '99 and find some other differences. The alternator on the JDM was a little weird (has since been trashed) but the one one from the old engine fit just fine.

I got mine from JDM Engine Zone in Clifton NJ. I would definitely recommend them if you are in that area. IMO, it is better to get the engine from a reliable vendor in your area so that if problems arise with your engine you can deal with them easily.

Oh yeah, the oil pan had to be swapped as well. The alternator might work if you swap the pulley. I'm keeping it as a spare.

Kind of blurry, but this is what the majority of JDM 5VZs are coming out of.

For some reason I got you and 68dave's location mixed up, that's why I asked Baltimore.
What vehicle is that? Looks like a car vs an SUV. My oil pan was swapped as well, forgot to mention that until now.

That would be a Toyota Hiace van. There is also the Granvia van which is built on the Hiace chassis. It is pretty popular outside the United States.

That looks like a ***** to work on compared to our 4runners and tacomas!

One other noticeable difference was that it looks to be pushed back maybe an inch or two. I'll get some measurements on it later today.

Today we went to The Narrows off of 64th street at the oceanfront and brought Kayaks. The new engine is running great and I can't wait to see how much my MPG's improve.
Sorry for all the crappy pictures as they're just cellphone pictures

Wow dude everything is coming along nicely!

Best of luck to you with the new engine.

One thing I forgot to mention in my earlier message was that when storing your pictures in the cloud (any company) you will want to make sure that each image is a throw away copy. Keep all of the edits amd originals on your LOCAL machine.

My folder structure is like this:
/TripDate_TripName/

With sub folders
/Originals/
/Edited Full Size/
/Exported_1450_Res/

:)
