MaxTrax and BajaRack Mount

I had on order from BajaRacks a set of MaxTrax and the rack mounts for them and an ax/shovel recently. I finally got in the MaxTrax and mount, but still waiting on the ax/shovel mount to be shipped.

Anyway, for those of you who are wondering, a standard basket (5" height) will clear most garages without a lift, but as soon as you install the MaxTrax mount, it adds additional height which may not. On my rig, the rear mount sits high enough that it bangs into the lower lip of the garage door when I pull it in. YMMV, but I figured I'd mention it.

I know it eats rack space but why not mount them flat instead of on their side? Mine fit inside the Gobi rack, granted it takes up a lot of rack space but it adds little to no overall height and because your rack sides are much taller it wouldn't add any height.

Because of the height of your rack sides you actually may be able to put them perpendicular across the rack and just have a inch or two of the ends sticking out the rack sides. (essentially mount them how [MENTION=124732]LawnDart[/MENTION] has on his Gobi but yours would be on the rack bottom with the edge of the Tracks hanging out instead of on top of the rack sides). Mine are fully within the sides of the Gobi but to do that I have to mount then diagonally which took up essentially 50% if not slightly more of the rack floor.

That is an odd way to mount them.. IMHO. I looked at those mounts and thought it would be problematic, so I made my own mounts and they sit flat on the rack. Obviously not ideal when loaded up with gear, but it works great 95% of the time.

The biggest reason is access. Mounted on the side, I don't have to climb up onto the roof of my rack to access the MTs when I need them. Since BajaRack won't sell their ladder until Gobi gets off their nutts, I'm limited by what I can reach.

I stand on my Domello rock sliders or the back tires to access the roof. I could use a ladder but only to reach the middle of the rack.

I don't have sliders yet. I'm limited to the tires or the back bumper, which, when carrying heavy gear (5G gas tanks weigh 30lbs each), isn't exactly the most stable platform.

Anyway, installing them on the side works for me at the moment. Easy to mount, easy to take off and use in a pinch, plenty of space left over on top. If the sacrifice is that I have to be careful pulling into the garage, that's the least of my worries.
