Maxxis Bighorn MT review- 255/85r16

I was in some desperate need of new tires, I was running some really used BFG KM mudders 255/85r16. I was having a little bit of a rubbing issue when fully stuffed, so I new I would need to crank on my coilovers to get the front a little high. I did that and went out the bought some Maxxis Bighorns. These tire where the cheapest tire I could find in this size...$194 a tire. I did some google reviews and all I read was that " these are amazing tires", good in mud, rock, rain, snow. I jumped on them and for the first 300+ miles I love them. They are very quite compared to KM, and all the old mudders they made 10 years ago. Do notice it at high rate turns. These are more of an All-Terrain than a mudder, but that is exactly what I am looking for. These are probably comparable to GY Duratracs... but better? I did Eagle Rock right after I got them and man was it noticeable. Hit all the hard routes solo, just me and my buddy spotting. A little trail damage but nothing to cry about.
Over all these tire are preettty badass!

I've nevet had the Big Horns, but have the Maxxis Bravo HT (all terrain) and love them.

What gears do you have on your 4runner?

Used to wheel my old maxxis bighorns hard on my 88 yota, they were
32x11.5 R15's...Lasted about 45,000 miles also. But anyway's as soon as I lifted my runner I slapped a set off 255/85 R16's on it and love them.

What gears do you have on your 4runner?

All 98' were 4.30's stock with the e-locker, that's what I have.
If you didnt get the factory e-lock it is 4.10 gearing.

Honestly, I think that it is perfectly geared for an auto

I knew I had the 4.10s, didn't know about the other stuff. Just wondering for the future. Can't wait for my current tires to get worn down and need replacing.

I'm running Bighorns but in the 285/70/16 flavour....LOVE THEM! I really wish I could get a deal on a used set for my winter rims!

im also running them, 285 70 17 and love them, they are a bit noisy but idc. they are by far the best off road tires ive ever had, next time im gonna run a set of goodyear MTRs but if i dont like those im gonna fall back to the bighorn

I know I've said it before, but.. I think they are great off road tires, but I don't like them in the snow. They do ok in deep stuff and trail snow, but they polish packed snow and slide out a lot IMO.

I will probably continue to use the Bighorns as good, cheap spring/summer/fall off road tires, but they won't be on my runner next winter.

I have a set of 255/85s on my mine as well, I must say i love them.

Had 315's on my 80 series and loved them too. Great off road but wore down rather quickly. I'd still love to have another set though....can't expect too much highway life from a mud tire anyway.

So, just checking back in regarding this 2011 post on then Maxxis Bighorns. So how have these held up? Also, Detwizzle, since you may run some of the same trails as I do, here in Colorado. What has been your experience with these tires on these trails (dry, wet, snow)?

Maxxis MTs are great. I've run both GY Duratracs and the Bighorns and I prefer the Bighorns much more. My Duratracs cupped and became EXTREMELY loud. Also, at 65% tread, the Duratracs went from great to horrible on packed snow and ice. The Bighorns started up on familiar hilly intersections in packed snow / ice in 2wd that the Duratracs struggled to gain traction on when new.

Full disclosure though - I siped (grooved really) the Bighorns. I'm convinced it made the tire perform markedly better.

There's a reason that there is a set sitting in my garage waiting to be put in when I build it out.

Still on bighorns with 40ishK and they still grab great, haven't chunked treads when wheeling like other cheap mudders I've ran. They do great on trails and I have not had a flat in 40k miles, they have wore very evenly and the front tread lugs have no cupping, no issues balancing 285/70/17s.. Not noisy, affordable compared to some others the same size, good budget off road tire.. I would be happy to buy them again.

Sounds good, these just jumped to the top of my list for 33" tires.

I have a 2000 4Runner on stock suspension and I'm planning on lifting by this summer. Does anyone have any experience fitting the 255/85R16 Bighorns with the stock suspension? Or will I have to wait until after I lift?
