McAfee ffffffuuuuuu!

McAfee has a known compatibility issue with Windows 7 64 bit OS. I found that it was McAfee causing my BSOD issues and everything ran smoothly after uninstalling it. I haven't had a single issue with XP 32 bit running both McAfee and AVG, but 7 is a different story. McAfee at least agreed to refund my entire subscription amount so I have no complaints with their customer service. Their tech department was quick to admit the issue too, so it was nice not having someone waste my time trying to correct a known problem without a resolution. Just wanted to throw this out there in case anyone running 7 in 64 bit and McAfee is getting the infamous BSOD :smashputer:

Number two...why buy, when you can get Microsoft anti-virus (security essentials) program for free...and from what i have read, it is just as good (if not better) than Mcafee or Norton or any other crap out there.

The techs at work also recommended the free Microsoft Security Essentials over the free home use Symantec Corporate we get get use.

I'm still on the fence with Security Essentials. I've read the reviews but still prefer AVG for AV freeware and plan to stick with them.

I run 2 AVs because of p2p software and the fact that AVs always have some weakness. I don't really need the 2 AVs on my laptop though since I don't allow any share software to be installed on it.

If you want to run two programs then it would be best to combine something that has a real time scan and another that has to be manually ran or scheduled. So, you could run Security Essentials (AVG, Avast, Anti-Vir or whatever) and Clamwin. The first scans everything as it comes in and then you manually or schedule Clamwin to run later.

For the most part all you're really doing is slowing your computer down and opening it up to more potential false positives etc. If you are that leary of the stuff you're getting from P2P activity then simply don't download it.

Well, i have had Norton, AVG, and Mcafee. Microsoft is the only that has done a perfect job to date. I highly recommend it...and the fact that it is free is just amazing!

Honestly, it's just not doing any good to have them. If you're speaking of shareware software this is generally legit software so I'm not sure why more than one anti-virus program would be needed anyway?

It sounds like you'd benefit from killing off any anti-virus you have now and putting Security Essentials to work and taking a trip over to a site like FileHippo.com - Download Free Software

Filehippo has a ton of great freeware and open source software so you can stop using some of the nagware/shareware you might be using.

If there's any particular program you need a replacement for post it up and I'm sure someone can try to help find a Free or Open Source alternative. Obviously, not every program has an alternative (or a good one) but maybe you'd find something you like.

Good info guys, thanks! McAfee outlived it's usefulness anyway. I guess I'm just skeptical about anything Microsoft says is free, but I'll try it out

Less than a year ago, I asked similar questions about my XP Pro laptop. I went with MS Essentials. Every time day I use this machine, the A/V is 'turned off' and always needs to be updated. Just takes a few mintues. I use Avira on my main PC, may switch to that. Advanced System Care is on all my machines.

Just yesterday, i installed Microsoft Security Essential "2" beta. Supposedly, MS improved the anti-virus engine and other stuff. Just google it and you can download it. You may have to sign into MS Connect (i did)...i downloaded the 64 bit IE version.

If you don't want to sign into MS Connect, then you can try this: Microsoft Security Essentials 2 beta now available for download

Scroll down and you will see links by bloggers (#7-10) that you can download straight the software for either 32 bit IE or 64 bit IE.

NOTE: I HAVE NO IDEA IF THESE LINKS ARE GOOD OR NOT...so, do it at your own risk.

Have you guys seen this: AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - Welcome to AV-Comparatives.org

Apparently, these folks are legit and respected from reading other various sites. They are independent and do anti-virus program comparisons. You can click on various testings that they have done over the years. MS Security Essentials (1, not 2 beta) ranks in the top class.

NOTE #2: i am NOT a computer expert...nor have i really look into this until yesterday when i read this thread and became interested. (I installed MS Essential Security earlier this year ONLY because my brother [computer geek] told me do so.) I am so far impress with MS...more so than the other brands that i have tried over the past many years.

Ryan, just buy a Mac, i got one 3 years ago, i haven't seen any virius protection software in 3 years, and haven't had no issues yet, and dont forsee any.

I toasted my work computer tonight, and the bad thing is I dont know what got it...

it was either the site with the traffic cams for I-80 in Cali or a facebook video dont honk at old people

my company runs Microsoft Forefront and it shut Forefront down instantly and I did a hard reboot to try and kill it, but it was too late,

I brought my computer back up and it wouldnt launch anything but IE and it forwarded everything I put in to a site to buy security suite LOL :dammit: :ybrick:

Never had that happen on my Mac.

Put a copy of combofix on a CD and run that from safe mode.

Well I am dumping Security Essentials. On my P4M IBM, it is almost a daily machine. On boot it will give me warnings of Firewalls turned off and A/V turned off. I have to update Essentials after checking Firewall. (XP Pro SP3) Avira does not give me false readings like that, even when I am away for a few days.
