Media Hype

Yes, this includes Fox News to MSNBC. I know why media sensationalize stories. They need to sell advertising in their format right? I would like to start a list of all the stories that the media "hyped" in 2014 and they either turned out not to be true, hyped to the point of population frenzy or were sensationalized to the point where the truth could not be determined. I'll start:

Ebola
Ferguson
Climate Change

If there is any hype in the media, it has to be concerning the apocalyptic Northeast snowstorm this week, or lack thereof. Even the idiot drivers from the South could manage OK.

Last week in DC on one of the local channels had a group of young kids visit their station. A reporter asked the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. One kid said a weatherman, since one can be wrong 100% of the time and still have a job. Nice

If Orson Wells was still alive today and acted out the alien invasion of "The War of the Worlds" on TV, there would be mass hysteria.

I can't believe it. Was scrolling through my TV guide yesterday and for Fox, NBC, ABC etc they all had multiple hour time slots for "Blizzard Storm Coverage." A blizzard in February, imagine that.

Malaysian Air Flight 370 - A sad situation for sure, but nothing but speculation and innuendo for a solid month or longer. I don't ever recall so much being said about so little actual valid information.

Don't know if you've had a chance to see "Nightcrawler" with Jake Gyllenhaal but it ain't too far from the truth. - I had the opportunity to work as a reporter for a small metro TV station for a very brief period of time. The Gyllenhaal character is a stretch but the news director, played by Rene Russo, is eerily spot on. Reminded me so much of my old directors.

There is sooooo much pressure to make ratings that the networks *both liberal and conservative* "make" news. -- And the public just eats that s%$t up and asks for seconds.

...Take everything you read, hear or see with a VERY large grain of salt.

Ice storm in Nashville. Twenty minutes online and they had my wife scared [poop]less that we'd be stranded without power or water for a week.

My daughter used to work in telecommunications when she lived in California at several of the big corporate owned stations. She won an Emmy for a news program she wrote and produced. She finally called it quits when she began to be dictated as to what political slant her programs should take in order to reflect the views that management was in favor of. She is quite liberal in her personal views (don't know what went wrong there, maybe mom) but insisted on reporting news in its' true light whether it matched her opinions or not. Everything in that business is about either ratings or sensationalism. With recent developments that we have seen in the "news" business it would be wonderful if we could somehow clone another Walter Cronkite. He was extremely liberal in his personal views but his presentation of the news was straight up and factual.
